Boljoon: Church Complex, Torta and Island Views
Accommodation in Boljoon
Boljoon combines a significant church complex with local festival culture, its own cake tradition, and natural attractions. The Patrocinio de Maria Church, the Fiesta of Our Lady of the Patronage celebrated in October, torta, and the Dayhag Waterfalls give a trip a range of different themes. Ili Rock and Ablayan Peak are also part of Boljoon’s landscape. If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Boljoon, you can first consider whether history, festival traditions, local cuisine, or nature should guide your choice of location.
Church Heritage in Boljoon
The Patrocinio de Maria Church, also known as Boljoon Church, is one of the oldest Augustinian churches on Cebu. In 2001, the National Museum of the Philippines declared it a National Cultural Treasure because of its outstanding historical, cultural, and architectural value; it was one of 26 Spanish colonial church buildings to receive this distinction. The church and convent complex also includes remnants of fortified walls, a cemetery, and a blockhouse. Boljoon’s religious heritage therefore encompasses not only the church itself, but also other parts of the complex.
October Festival and Local Torta
Every October, Boljoon celebrates the Fiesta of Our Lady of the Patronage with religious processions, cultural performances, and community activities. If this festival is important to your trip, you should keep October in mind as a specific time to visit. Another aspect of local culture is torta: this rich, dense sponge cake is traditionally made with tuba, a coconut wine, instead of yeast. In this way, a recurring celebration and a local cake specialty offer different points of connection with culture and cuisine.
Views and History on the Mountain
Ablayan Peak is in Barangay Upper Becerril in Boljoon. A 2016 report describes a 360-degree view from the summit of the neighboring islands of Bohol, Negros, and Siquijor. Another 2016 report describes views from Ili Rock of the sea, the surrounding islands, the mountains, and the town of Boljoon. The views therefore differ in focus: at Ablayan Peak, three islands are specifically named; at Ili Rock, the described view also includes mountains and the town.
A 2016 report mentions a concrete staircase with 136 steps on the mountain at Ili Rock. It also describes work on the rock intended to stop rocks falling during landslides; the work sparked protests. Alongside the views, Ili Rock is therefore also associated with the history of the intervention in the rock and the reaction it prompted at the time.
The Dayhag Waterfalls
The Dayhag Waterfalls have several cascades, and the path to the higher cascades becomes increasingly challenging. A 2024 article describes bamboo and nipa rest huts near the waterfalls. For nature lovers, the differences between these natural attractions are clear: at Dayhag, the difficulty increases with altitude, while reports on Ablayan Peak and Ili Rock foreground the views.
