Surigao Del Norte brings together island and coastal landscapes, waterfalls and mangrove areas. The Siargao Islands Protected Landscape and Seascape encompasses 48 islands and islets. The province is also home to a wide variety of natural attractions: a sea-facing cave, several waterfalls and beaches, each with its own features. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first considering which of these landscapes interests you most. This can help you narrow down suitable places to look for a vacation rental or holiday home.

Islands and Unique Habitats

The Siargao Islands Protected Landscape and Seascape is located in Surigao del Norte on Mindanao. Its habitat is home to Philippine tarsiers, flying lemurs and saltwater crocodiles. Endemic birds are also found there, including tarictic hornbills, rufous-headed hornbills and Philippine cockatoos. These species contribute to the island and coastal landscape’s distinctive natural diversity; however, their presence does not guarantee that you will see any particular animal during a visit.

Another natural area in the province is the Del Carmen Mangrove Reserve. It is designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Surigao del Norte therefore offers both an island and seascape comprising several islands and a wetland of international importance as distinct nature-related attractions.

Caves and Waterfalls in Malimono

Sohoton Cave is located in Sitio Sohoton, Barangay Karihatag, Malimono. It is a cave that faces the sea. This orientation already sets it apart from a waterfall or a beach visit: the appeal here is a cave landscape connected to the sea. Tugawi Falls in Malimono offer a different kind of natural attraction. They consist of three clearly distinct levels, including plunge pools and other smaller cascades. If you are especially interested in waterfalls, you will find not just a single waterfall here, but a multi-tiered landscape with several distinct features.

Washington Falls is also in Malimono, in Barangay Tinago. It is the highest waterfall in the municipality of Malimono. This distinction makes it another option for travelers interested in waterfalls; by itself, it says nothing about access or the route there. Campo Langit, also in Malimono, offers a different perspective on the coastal towns: it has a campsite and 360-degree views of Malimono’s coastal towns. The views and camping facilities give this place a different character from the waterfall attractions.

Beaches with Different Appeal

Star Beach is located in Barangay Cantapoy, Malimono. The beach is used for quiet reflection, meditation and swimming. Punta Verde Beach in Malimono is suitable for watching the sunset and swimming. Pagaura Beach, also in Barangay Cantapoy, features rock formations and offers opportunities to relax. Each description highlights something different: quiet time at the beach, sunsets and swimming, or relaxation on a beach with rock formations. You can choose between these places based on the kind of beach experience that best suits your trip.

Surigao Del Norte offers several clearly distinct natural attractions, without requiring caves, islands, waterfalls and beaches to be combined into a single outing. Mainit is another destination in the region.
