Lumban: Church and Historic Music School
Accommodation in Lumban
The Church of Lumbang in Lumban, Laguna, connects local history with the region’s early missionary activities. A historic plaque from 1939 commemorates the development of the church.
From Wood and Thatch to a Stone Church
The original church was made of wood and thatch and was destroyed by fire. Its replacement was the first stone church built in Laguna; it was completed in 1600. A solemn Eucharistic procession took place here on October 9 of the same year.
In 1880, the church suffered severe damage in an earthquake. Check with the parish for current access arrangements before visiting.
A Center for Missionary Work and Music Lessons
Lumbang was, for a time, a center of missionary activity in Laguna. Juan de Plasencia worked here in 1578. In 1606, under Juan de Santa Maria, a regional school was established where 400 boys learned liturgical hymns and how to play musical instruments.
