Buraimi: Forts, Falaj and Urban Space
Accommodation in Buraimi
Buraimi brings together the striking forms of historic forts and the story of traditional irrigation systems. It is also home to an urban project between two forts. Architecture, water engineering and urban space offer different focal points for planning your trip—and can help you decide what to focus on when looking for a holiday rental.
Forts and Historic Sites
Al Khandaq Fort dates from the 19th century and was restored in 1993. Its square layout, towers and several rooms are part of a complex whose spaces once served military and civilian purposes. Defensive walls and loopholes define its architecture, while the fort also overlooks Wadi Al Jizzi. The combination of a defensive design and views across the wadi makes Al Khandaq a distinctive feature of the city.
Al Hillah Fort is a historic landmark in the centre of Buraimi. Together with Al Khandaq Fort, it serves as a reference point for the Buraimi Oasis Project – City Center, which lies between the two forts. Historic buildings and an urban project therefore meet here, while retaining their distinct characters.
The historic village of Hamasa lies near the destination. Its features include a tower, an old market, mud-brick houses and historic mosques. Within the wider destination of Buraimi, Hamasa was also a trading centre that connected Oman with neighbouring countries. The historic quarter of Hamasa in the wider destination of Buraimi is estimated to be more than 500 years old. It comprises two neighbourhoods, a marketplace and several towers connected by Falaj Al Jaimi.
Irrigation History and Urban Space
Falaj Al Sa’ara, also known as Al Sa’rani, is a traditional irrigation system in Buraimi. It was revived after 15 years of inactivity. It stretches for more than six kilometres and has been developed as a cultural and tourist attraction. The project was also expanded to include tourist facilities such as swimming pools and majlis areas. The falaj thus connects the history of irrigation with later tourism development.
The Buraimi Oasis Project – City Center was inaugurated on 7 January 2026. Its first phase includes a small oasis and 174 palm trees distributed across squares and walkways. The project features designated pedestrian and cycling paths, as well as more than 200 parking spaces. A restaurant is located on the lower floor of one of the buildings. Palms, squares and paths give the project a different urban focus from the forts or the traditional irrigation system.
More Landscapes in the Wider Destination of Buraimi
Within the wider destination of Buraimi, the Wilayat of Mahdah and Al Sunaina offer further, contrasting landscapes. Mahdah is a destination for excursions, camping and exploring wadis, mountains and dunes, particularly in winter. Al Sunaina is also considered a destination for winter excursions, camping and exploring sandy areas. The Falaj Mahdah hiking trail is considered one of the best routes in the Wilayat of Mahdah; the Al Khatwa village loop passes through plantations and the Falaj Al Khatwa oasis.
In the Wilayat of Al Sunaina, Falaj Al Rayhani emerges from underground as a Dawoodi falaj and irrigates extensive areas of fields and palm groves. Wadi Al Qahfi is home to several pools surrounded by palms and flowering oleander. The golden dunes of Hamasa are suitable for sand sports. In Mahdah, Bayt Al Nad Fort is considered the largest and oldest fortress in the wilayat; its history is thought to date back to before the 18th century.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Holiday Rental
If you are travelling with children or people with different interests, these clear themes can help you plan your days: fort architecture and irrigation history offer a cultural focus, while wadis, palm groves and dunes bring different landscapes into view. First consider whether your trip will focus mainly on the forts, Falaj Al Sa’ara and the City Center in Buraimi, or whether destinations in Mahdah and Al Sunaina will be central to your plans. Base your holiday rental search on that focus. This keeps your choice of where to stay closely connected to the places you want to explore in more depth.
