Zouk Mikael: Discover Festivals, the Souk and Culture
Accommodation in Zouk Mikael
In Zouk Mikael, an annual festival held in July and the craft history of the Old Souk offer starting points for a stay. Other highlights include event venues, activities at the Youth & Culture Center and the public garden. Depending on your interests, you can focus your trip more on cultural history, events or activities for different age groups.
Festival and event venues
The Zouk Mikael International Festival takes place every year in July. Its venue is a Roman-style amphitheater with a stated capacity of 3,000 people. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for that year’s edition in advance.
Another event venue is the arena at the Public Park. It is equipped with sound and lighting systems and intended for international events. This gives you two different points of reference for planning your trip: an annual festival held in July and a venue with an international focus.
Craft history in the Old Souk
The Old Souk reflects a diverse craft tradition. It was known for weaving, shoemaking, carpentry, gemology, Nawl weaving and canning. These trades ranged from processing materials to making and preserving goods, giving the souk’s history several facets. The lower section was converted into a pedestrian zone.
In 1988, the municipal council, under Nohad Naufal, began restoring the Old Souk to preserve its traditional architectural character. The souk is also home to the “Al-Mir” Coffee Shop, considered an archaeological landmark. Together, the craft history, the restoration and this landmark offer different cultural points of interest for exploring the area.
Activities for different age groups
The Youth & Culture Center offers weekly, monthly and seasonal activities. These include language courses, painting lessons for children and adults, and read-aloud sessions for toddlers. If you want to plan a specific activity, check the current program directly with the Center.
The Center’s theater seats up to 110 people. It can be used for concerts and plays, dance and piano lessons, a film club, and public awareness campaigns by NGOs. This range brings together stage events, classes and other types of activities. When planning, you can decide whether you are most interested in an event, a class or the cultural history of the Old Souk.
Public garden and trip planning
The public garden includes a small Roman theater that can host cultural and educational events, a stream, several water features and a children’s play area. The garden thus combines a possible setting for cultural and educational activities with garden features and a play area. If you plan to visit, check the garden’s current operating status beforehand.
When looking for a holiday rental in Zouk Mikael, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: travel dates around the festival, the history of the Old Souk or activities that interest your group.
