Sede Boker reveals itself through a clear contrast: the history of David Ben-Gurion in Kibbutz Sde Boker and the surrounding landscape. At its heart is the original residence where Ben-Gurion lived and worked; the canyon, watercourse and birdwatching offer a different perspective on the desert region. This lets you decide whether culture or nature should shape your stay more.

The Ben-Gurion House: Living, Working, Ideas

The Ben-Gurion House in Kibbutz Sde Boker includes the original hut where David Ben-Gurion lived and worked. The home of Paula and David Ben-Gurion has been preserved as it was on the day David Ben-Gurion died in 1973. His home was opened to the public in 1974. The hut is open to individual visitors and groups; check the latest visitor information before your trip.

The house brings together personal insights and Ben-Gurion’s political and social ideas. Interactive exhibits, videos, original artifacts and themed stations explore his ideas, values and decisions. One exhibition covers his connection to Sde Boker and his vision for the Negev. Photos, quotations and video clips set this vision alongside the present-day reality. The study contains a collection of around 5,000 books in approximately nine languages. A guided tour of the hut takes about an hour and a half and can be adapted to the needs of each group.

Canyon and Water Nearby

Below Midreshet Ben-Gurion, the Tsin stream has carved out a deep canyon. Three springs feed a stream that flows year-round. The waterways create a striking contrast with the dry desert landscape. In the wider Sde Boker area lies En Avdat National Park. There is a waterfall there with a pool at its base.

The history of the landscape is also part of the picture: monks used caves overlooking the Ein Avdat Canyon for solitude in Byzantine times. The national park is near the Ben-Gurion family grave and Midreshet Sde Boker. One entrance to the national park is about three kilometers south of Kibbutz Sde Boker.

Desert Birds: A Different Perspective

The birdwatching center in the entrance hall of the Tzinim Cliffs Nature Reserve is south of Midreshet Ben-Gurion and north of Avdat National Park. A film and interactive stations offer a fun way to learn about life in the desert and the main threats facing desert birds. This adds a dedicated nature theme to Ben-Gurion’s life story: the focus here is on desert life and bird conservation.
