Salem offers a variety of reasons to explore: the Government Museum displays hero stones and sculptures, Sangagiri Fort brings together traces of different periods of rule, and temple festivals add their own cultural accents. There are also natural attractions such as the Aanaivari Waterfalls, which flow seasonally. When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by considering whether culture, religious traditions or landscapes should be the focus of your stay.

Cultural history at the museum and fort

At the Government Museum in Salem, you can see hero stones depicting the brave deeds of warriors and rulers from Salem District. The collection also includes sculptures from the Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagar periods. The different subjects and eras offer two ways to explore history: the hero stones commemorate celebrated deeds, while the sculptures showcase art from several historical periods.

Sangagiri Fort was built in the 15th century by the Vijayanagar Empire. Some of its twelve fortification walls were built by the British. The fort includes a death well, a granary, two mosques and two Varadhraja Perumal temples. Former British Army administrative buildings and cemeteries for armies once stationed there are also part of its historical heritage. Religious, military and administrative traces stand side by side here; however, the fort originated during the Vijayanagar Empire.

Temples and festivals at different times of year

The Shevarayan Temple is a cave temple where Lord Perumal blesses devotees. Its festival takes place in May, with thousands of members of the hill tribes taking part. The Kottai Mariamman Temple festival falls at a different time of year: it lasts a week, ends with a fire-walking ceremony and takes place in July or August. Comparing the festival dates can help you plan your trip if you want to time your visit to coincide with one. Check the latest dates before you go.

Natural attractions and discoveries

The Aanaivari Waterfalls are in Muttal village in the Attur Forest area and attract visitors from the western districts. The Forest Department developed the waterfalls at Muttal as a tourist destination. Their water flow is seasonal, so it is advisable to check conditions before visiting. Kurumbapatti Zoological Park offers a different kind of connection with nature: it is a small zoo in a natural setting.

At Yercaud’s Silk Farm & Rose Garden, you can observe several stages of silk production: growing mulberry trees, raising silkworms and spinning silk. This gives the visit a distinct focus on agriculture and craftsmanship. Alongside the temples and waterfalls, there is a wide range of interests to choose from. You can use these differences to decide which attractions will shape your stay, rather than reducing all your travel experiences to a single theme.

Getting there and planning your accommodation

Salem Airport is a domestic airport in Kamalapuram, in Omalur Taluk, 19 kilometres from Salem city. Check flight schedules separately if you are considering travelling by air. For bus connections, MGR Integrated Bus Terminus serves as the long-distance bus terminal, while the Town Bus Stand serves local routes. This distinguishes the two bus stations according to the type of connection you need.

For road travel, Salem lies at the junction of National Highways NH7, running north–south, NH47 towards the west and NH68 towards the east. As road numbering can change, check the current directions for your specific journey. When choosing your holiday rental, you can take your preferred focus—museum and fort, a temple festival or natural attractions—into account alongside your travel plans.
