Kanyakumari is known for its temples and memorials; Kanniyakumari district lies at the southern tip of the Indian peninsula. The Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal meet there. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing places in the destination from those in the wider area and choosing your holiday rental to suit the places you plan to visit.

Temples and Memorials

Arulmigu Bhagavathiamman Temple stands where the three seas meet. The Vivekananda Rock Memorial commemorates Swami Vivekananda’s visit to Shripada Parai from 24 to 26 December 1892. It consists of Vivekananda Mandapam and Shripada Mandapam. Its history and architecture provide two specific points of interest for a visit: the stay it commemorates and the two named halls.

The Gandhi Memorial in Kanniyakumari was completed in 1956 as a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. An urn containing his ashes was kept there for public homage before cremation. The Thiruvalluvar Statue is also a notable memorial: the 133-foot-high stone sculpture depicts the Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar.

Kumari Amman Temple is dedicated to the goddess Parvati in her form as a virgin. The temple’s visiting hours are listed as 4:30 am to 12:30 pm and 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm; check them before your visit. The Government Museum has an extensive collection of sculptures and handicrafts from South Indian temples. Religious sites and works of art therefore offer distinct points of interest.

Bridge, Park and Festival

Mathoor Hanging Trough is considered Asia’s highest and longest trough bridge. It is 115 feet high and one kilometre long. A staircase leads from the upper end to the lower end; there is also a children’s park and bathing platforms. This makes it a destination in its own right, with several architectural features that set it apart from the memorials and temples.

ECO Park was established in 2018–19 on six hectares at the State Horticulture Farm in Kanniyakumari. For families with children, the modern playground is a specific point of reference: it is intended for children under twelve. If you are planning a visit in May, you can also include Kumari Thiruvizha. The festival takes place every year that month; residents and visitors take part in festivities and cultural activities. Dates may vary from year to year.

Places to Visit Nearby

There are different things to see beyond the memorials and temples. Kodayar Twin Falls is a two-tiered waterfall in Veerapuli Reserve Forest near Kanyakumari. The water plunges about 200 feet into dense greenery. Thiruparappu Water Falls is about 55 kilometres from Kanniyakumari, drops almost 50 feet and flows for about seven months of the year. There is a swimming pool for children; check whether it is open before your trip.

For cultural history in the wider area, consider Chitharal Jain Rock Cut Temple, about 45 kilometres from Kanniyakumari. Its rock reliefs date from the 9th century and depict Tirthankaras and attendant deities. The walk from the foot of the hill to the temple takes about ten minutes; local conditions may vary. Vattakottai Fort is regarded as a coastal fort and picnic spot; the sea there is considered calm and suitable for swimming. The possible destinations each offer a distinct focus: rock reliefs, waterfalls and a coastal fort.
