Ratnagiri offers a wide range of points of interest: the distinctive architecture and exile history of Thiba Palace, sites commemorating Indian history, a museum with marine and freshwater life, and Mandavi Beach with its black sand. Architecture, political memory, depictions of animals and coastal scenery each provide their own focus.

Thiba Palace: Architecture and Exile History

Thiba Palace is a three-storey palace with sloping roofs and carved, semicircular wooden windows. The first floor contains a ballroom with a marble floor. The features described include both the building’s striking design and a clearly identified interior space.

The palace was built in 1910 for King Thibaw of Myanmar during his exile. The king and queen of Myanmar lived there until 1916. The palace houses a museum where some objects used by King Thibaw have been preserved. In this way, the building’s history and the king’s biography are connected with tangible objects.

Behind Thiba Palace stands a Buddha idol. From a spot near the palace, the view extends over Someshwar Creek, Bhatye Bridge and the Arabian Sea. These named viewpoints add a distinct perspective on the surroundings to the architectural details. Thiba Palace and Thiba King Tomb attract visitors from Myanmar, including senior officials.

Fort and Memorial Sites

Ratnadurg Fort is an old fort with a history dating back to the time of the Maratha Empire. The Bhagwati Temple is located within the fort grounds. The two names therefore represent different aspects of the same place: the historic fort and the temple located there.

Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak is also associated with Ratnagiri. The Tilak Ali Museum is his ancestral home and has been converted into a museum that presents his life and sacrifices for India’s freedom. Tilak was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement. His birthplace in Ratnagiri has been preserved by the government as a national monument.

Marine Life and Freshwater Aquariums

The Ratnagiri Marine Fish Museum was established in 1985 by the Marine Biological Research Station. The animals on display include seahorses, lionfish, triggerfish, sea turtles, starfish, lobsters and sea snakes. A separate freshwater aquarium area focuses on native prawns, crabs, turtles and aquatic plants.

The two areas have different focuses: in addition to marine life, the collection described also includes freshwater species and plants. The museum therefore covers more than one group of sea animals and provides a natural history contrast to Ratnagiri’s historic buildings and memorial sites.

Mandavi Beach and Its Coastline

Mandavi Beach is known for its black sand and is therefore often called “Black Sea.” The beach’s coastline extends to Rajiwanda Port. The dark sand is a striking landscape feature, while the named port gives a sense of the coastline’s extent. Mandavi Beach thus offers a distinct coastal focus alongside Ratnagiri’s palaces, forts and museums.
