Sagar between wilderness and rock art
Accommodation in Sagar
Sagar combines impressive protected areas with archaeological sites, prehistoric rock art and living temple traditions. Eran and Abchand tell stories of a distant past; Rangir is known for its temple and recurring fairs. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first choose the focus of your trip: Should nature take centre stage, or rock art or cultural sites? This priority can guide your choice of location without requiring all destinations to carry equal weight.
Protected areas and landscapes
The Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses the catchment areas of the Ganges and Narmada rivers and lies at the point where the districts of Sagar, Damoh and Narsingpur meet. It is characterised by the dry deciduous forests of the Vindhya region, where teak is predominant in many places. Herbivores in the area include nilgai, chinkara, chital, sambar and blackbuck. The species list gives an impression of the sanctuary’s wildlife; it does not guarantee sightings of any particular animals.
The Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve covers 2,339 square kilometres across the districts of Sagar, Damoh and Narsinghpur. Its terrain is rugged and rocky; open grasslands and dry deciduous forests also characterise the landscape. This offers a choice of different natural settings: Nauradehi is characterised by its dry deciduous forest and the two river catchment areas, while the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve is also described as having rocky terrain and open grasslands.
Rock art and archaeological traces
The village of Eran lies at the confluence of the Bina and Reuta rivers and has an interesting collection of archaeological remains. It formed the northernmost boundary of the Chalcolithic, or Copper Age, culture in Madhya Pradesh. A striking statue at the site is the colossal Varaha: it is about 10 feet tall and is considered the most significant statue in Eran. Its riverside location, remains and extraordinary size give Eran several distinct historical facets.
In Abchand Protected Forest, the ravines of the Gadheri River contain about a dozen caves carved into the rock, with prehistoric paintings. The largest cave is approximately 40 feet long and contains more than a dozen images, including depictions of prehistoric activities and hunting scenes. The approximate number of caves and the dimensions of the largest one help distinguish rock art as a focus in its own right, alongside Eran’s archaeological remains.
Historic sites and temple traditions
The remains of a summer residence known as Shish Mahal, or Glass Palace, have been preserved in Gadpehra. North of the hill below Gadpehra lies the small lake Motital. The residence remains and the lake offer different points of interest: the preserved historic building takes centre stage here, while there it is the landscape described at the foot of the hill.
Rangir lies on the banks of the Dahar River. Fairs in honour of Harsiddi Devi are held at her temple in the months of Asvina and Chaitra. The Chaitra fair is considered significant, and many people visit the temple for it. If attending one of these festivals is part of your plans, check the specific event dates in advance. This keeps your travel planning tied to the named festival months without assuming a particular date.
Getting there and planning a suitable trip
Sagar has its own railway station, Sagar Railway Station, with connections to major cities in Madhya Pradesh. As rail connections can change, check the current timetable before departure. The nearest domestic airport is Dumna Airport in Jabalpur. The drive from Sagar takes about four hours; actual journey time may vary depending on road conditions.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can use your planned activities to help make your decision: travellers who focus mainly on protected areas and landscapes will have different priorities from those particularly interested in Eran, Abchand or Rangir’s temple tradition. Compare the specific location of an offer with your own priorities and planned journey. This way, your accommodation choice reflects the trip you actually want to take.
