Bhopal brings together lakes and wildlife with museums, mosques and palaces. At Van Vihar National Park, you can encounter a variety of animal groups; boating is possible on Bhojtal. There are also exhibitions, architecture and culinary specialties, offering a range of different themes for a trip. When choosing your holiday rental, first consider which of these sides of the city interests you most.

Wildlife, cycling paths and lakes

Van Vihar National Park was established in a degraded forest area and designated a national park in 1981 under the Wildlife Protection Act. Predators such as tigers, lions, panthers, bears and hyenas are kept in large enclosures. Herbivores such as chital and blackbuck, by contrast, are free to roam. A reptile section features cobras, Russell's vipers and pythons. If you want to experience the park landscape actively, you can cycle on designated paths; check the current conditions in advance, as operational details may change.

The lakes’ names also tell a story of their history: the Upper Lake is known as Bada Talab and was renamed Bhojtaal in March 2011 in honour of Raja Bhoj. Bhojtal, also known as the Upper Lake, offers opportunities for boating, which may be seasonal. The Lower Lake was created in 1794 by Nawab Chhote Khan. Manuabhan Tekri in Sun City, Lalghati, offers panoramic views of the Upper Lake and Bhopal’s old town.

Museums offering different perspectives

The Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum presents Madhya Pradesh’s seven major tribes—Gond, Bhil, Korku, Baiga, Sahariya, Kol and Bhariya—with life-size models of tribal homes and depictions of rituals and festivals. Other visitor attractions complement the exhibitions: the Chinhari shop stocks handicrafts made by tribal communities, and an amphitheatre hosts cultural performances.

The Regional Museum of Natural History offers a natural history perspective. Its collections include preserved specimens, skeletal structures, life-size animal models and fossils. Interactive galleries, activity rooms and resource centres focus on environmental education. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between insights into tribal cultures and natural history topics, rather than centring all your museum visits on the same theme.

Mosques and palace history

The Taj-ul-Masjid is described as India’s largest mosque and one of the largest mosques in the world; its capacity is 175,000 worshippers. The Jama Masjid was built in 1837 during the reign of Qudsiya Begum. The construction history of Gohar Mahal is also connected to her: Qudisiya Begum, also known as Gohar Begum and ruler of Bhopal, had the palace built in 1821. It combines Hindu and Mughal architecture.

The Mughal empress Sikander Jahan Begum commissioned the Moti Masjid in the late 19th century. Its stones are shaped like flowers. Alongside the different construction periods of the Jama Masjid and Gohar Mahal, it offers a distinct way to explore Bhopal’s history—through its female patrons, dates and architectural features.

Flavours and local crafts

In Bhopal, Sulemani Chai is served both sweet and salty, with plenty of cream. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Bhopali Paan. Alongside the sights, both specialities add a culinary touch to your trip: the drink with its sweet-and-salty profile, and paan as another much-loved local speciality.

At Bhopal Haat, cultural events and festivals put handicrafts in the spotlight: artisans present handloom textiles and other works. If you want to plan your trip around such an event, check the dates in advance.

The right holiday rental for your plans

As a guide, Van Vihar National Park is about 12 km from Raja Bhoj Airport and about 5 km from Bhopal railway station; the actual distance depends on the route you choose. When selecting your holiday rental, it helps to prioritise the outings that will set the tone for your trip: cycling and wildlife at Van Vihar, the possibility of seasonal boating on Bhojtal, or museums and architecture. Compare a property’s location with your own plans, without assuming that distances to the park indicate distances to other places within Bhopal.
