Leh brings together monastic culture, historic sights and sweeping views. Shanti Stupa stands on a small hill; from there, panoramic views stretch across Leh and the surrounding villages. The nine-storey Leh Palace is also one of the sights for tourists. Anyone interested in the region’s history and religious culture will find several very different points of interest in Leh—from the palace to the monastery.

Monasteries, Palace and Unique Impressions

Thiksey Monastery was founded in 1433 and is the largest monastery in Central Ladakh. Morning prayers are held there every day. This makes Thiksey an interesting destination for travellers who want to explore religious practice and monastic history. Leh Palace offers a different perspective: its nine storeys are a defining feature of this tourist attraction. In Leh, sacred traditions and palace history thus stand side by side as distinct cultural themes.

Alchi also offers rewarding impressions: its unique wood carvings, statues and frescoes are particularly memorable features of a visit. The different art forms invite you to pay attention to the details rather than simply tick sights off a list. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you would prefer to focus on monasteries and religious traditions, historic buildings or individual works of art.

Festivals on Different Dates

The Ladakh Festival takes place in Leh in September. Hemis Tsechu is celebrated at Hemis Monastery in June. Dosmochey takes place every year at Leh Palace and features sacred traditional masked dances. These details give a concrete sense of how cultural experiences vary by place and time: a festival in Leh, a celebration at Hemis Monastery and masked dances at the palace all feature. If a particular festival is important to your trip, check the exact event dates before making plans.

One event with specific dates was the Himalayan Film Festival, held in Leh on 29 and 30 September 2024. It gave filmmakers from all Himalayan states and union territories a platform to present their work. This event was part of the cultural programme for 2024; it does not indicate that the festival will be repeated in another year.

Landscapes and Experiences in the Wider Travel Region

The wider Leh-Ladakh region also offers striking landscapes. Pangong Tso is a high-altitude brackish-water ecosystem: one third of the lake lies in India and two thirds in China. Depending on the time of year, the water can appear blue, green or red. Tsomoriri Lake is part of the Tsomoriri Wetland Conservation Reserve, a Ramsar site regarded as the highest-altitude Ramsar site in the world. The two lakes represent different aspects of a trip focused on nature and scenery.

In the Nubra Valley, safaris on double-humped camels are offered on the sand dunes of Hundar. Panamik’s hot spring is one of the valley’s attractions; in Diskit, the 108-foot statue of Maitreya Buddha is considered the main attraction. Hanle offers another distinctive experience: it is home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, considered one of the highest observatories in the world. Hanle is about 260 km from Leh. Its clear night skies are ideal for stargazing and astrophotography.

Magnetic Hill lies in the vicinity of Leh, 30 km from the town. Stationary vehicles there appear to roll uphill. The phenomenon is attributed either to a mysterious magnetic force or to an optical illusion. This unusual sight is quite different from the monasteries, festivals and landscapes that shape the other travel experiences.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Leh, it helps to clarify what you want to focus on during your trip: would you mainly like to explore Leh and its cultural attractions, or are you especially interested in other destinations in the Leh-Ladakh region? The places mentioned offer different reasons to plan a visit, without forming one single itinerary.
