Verna combines a predominantly hilly landscape with traditional crafts and distinctive historical associations. When choosing a holiday rental, it is therefore worth considering pottery and local history as part of your travel interests, alongside the landscape.

Landscape and Waterways

Verna’s landscape is predominantly hilly, interspersed with lower-lying plains. Both are part of the local scenery. When planning your trip, you can consider whether this contrast between hills and plains matches your idea of a holiday destination.

A named body of water adds to the landscape: Vernechem Tollem lies between the localities of Ambulor and Poriebhat in Verna. If you use place names to orient yourself on a map while planning, the waterway’s name provides a specific reference point between these two localities.

In the vicinity of the destination, Goa’s tourism authority has designated Kesarval Spring as a tourist attraction. It is located near the Verna Plateau. If you plan to visit, check the latest access information in advance.

Crafts and Historic Memorial Sites

Pottery is a traditional craft in Verna. As recently as October 2025, it was practised in about half a dozen households. This approximate number gives a concrete sense of the scale of this craft tradition, which was present in several households in the village.

One historic landmark is the old wayside cross in Mardol, Verna, which has been renovated over time. Its Portuguese inscription commemorates the first mass in the lands of Salcete in 1519; the cross also bears the date May 1959. These two dates refer to different things: 1519 is the year of the commemorated mass, while May 1959 is the date inscribed on the cross.

The former temple of the deity Mahalasa is also part of Verna’s history. It stood at an old shrine in the village. An industrial area now occupies the site. The memory of the former shrine and the site’s current industrial use therefore coexist in this place.

Further Cultural Perspectives in Salcete

In the wider destination of Salcete, the Goa Chitra Ethnographic Museum in Benaulim presents agricultural Goa through mostly old farming tools and equipment. The museum is set against the backdrop of an organic farm and showcases traditions of the past. Its aim is to introduce visitors to traditional indigenous implements. Here, the focus is on Goa’s everyday agricultural culture.

Another historical site in Salcete is Rachol Seminary, located directly beside the banks of the Zuari River. It was built between 1574 and 1610 and is a centre for the study of philosophy and theology. Today, what remains of Rachol Fort is mainly a ruin: an archway over the road to the seminary, as well as a dried-up moat around the seminary hill. The fort was built by the Bahmani Sultanate and later fell to the Vijayanagar kings after a prolonged, bloody battle. The seminary’s construction period and the fort’s history offer different historical perspectives on Rachol.

Margao also offers its own points of interest within the wider destination of Salcete: the Margao Cultural Walk explores the city on foot. In Ana Fonte Garden, oriental-style footbridges and fountains shape the garden’s appearance. Salcete thus offers urban exploration and garden design as distinct themes alongside Rachol’s historical sites.

Verna as a Location for Your Holiday Rental

If you want to shape your stay primarily around the character of the village, Verna’s landscape, pottery tradition and local history are useful points of reference. If you are also interested in Salcete’s broader cultural themes, you can include the region as a wider planning area. This distinction helps you consider Verna as a destination separately from the regional examples when choosing a holiday rental.
