Arambol can be explored through a range of interests: access to Harmal Beach, designated areas for water sports, and a church history dating back to the 18th century. These details can help you weigh up the focus of your trip—whether you are particularly interested in the route to the beach, specific activities on the water, or historic architecture.

Harmal Beach: Allow Time for the Walk Down

Harmal Beach is not accessible by car. Narrow lanes lead down to the beach from higher coastal paths; the final stretch is a walk down a slope. Getting to the water is therefore part of finding your way around: plan to walk down rather than expecting to drive right up to the beach.

If the beach is an important reason for your trip, you can take this type of access into account when choosing your holiday apartment. The described route consists of lanes followed by a final walk down the slope. Factor in the walk when planning your days at Harmal Beach.

Water Sports: Two Designated Areas

A notice issued by the Government of Goa on January 6, 2022, designates an area at Arambol Beach beside the 21 Coconut Restaurant, 120 metres to the right of the lifeguard tower, for kayaking and surfing. The notice specifies only non-motorised activities in this area; kayaks must be used with a guide. If you plan to take part in these activities, bear in mind both the location and the requirement to use kayaks with a guide.

Another area designated in the same notice is by Surf Wala in Girkar Vaddo. The notice lists jet ski and boat rides, inflatable banana and bumper rides, and winch parasailing there. The two locations therefore refer to different, specifically named activities. The notice dates from January 2022: before travelling, check the applicable local rules and whether the activities are currently operating.

The distinction is useful for planning your trip: one of the named areas is for non-motorised activities and kayaking with a guide, while the other is for the listed rides and parasailing. If you are interested in a particular activity, it helps to keep the corresponding area in mind and check the current conditions in advance.

Church History in Arambol

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church is considered the first parish church in the Pernem area; its history dates back to the 18th century. The first church in Arambol was built in 1780 and dedicated to St John the Baptist. In 1841, it was rebuilt and dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. These dates mark important stages in its history, from the first church in the village to its later dedication.

The façade also tells of a later change: in 1878, part of it was demolished and replaced with an elaborately decorated façade. Together, the construction, rebuilding, dedication and façade renovation form a timeline that brings the church’s long history to life. For those interested in cultural history as well as the beach, Arambol offers another aspect to consider when choosing the focus of your holiday.
