Samastipur brings together religious traditions and archaeological and historical sites. Across the district, everyday worship, annual rituals and stories about sacred sites exist side by side. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: would you like to focus on temples and pilgrimage sites, or also explore the history of individual places? Rail and road connections are another practical factor.

Temples, Pilgrimage Sites and Traditions

At the heart of Samastipur is Thaneshwar Temple, which attracts many worshippers every day. On Mondays during Sawan, people also come from other areas. They bring water from Chamtha, Simaria or Jhamtiya, carry kanwars and perform Jalabhishek. This seasonal practice differs from the daily worship at the temple.

Another religious landmark is Jai Maa Saraswati Sthan in Sonupur-Uttar Panchayat, in Rosera Block. Public worship takes place there every day; special prayers and rituals are held each year for Saraswati Puja. If you want to plan your trip around this occasion, check the specific festival dates when making your plans.

Mannipur Durga Temple is in Warisnagar Block, about five kilometres from the district headquarters. Its Durga statue is known as Manokamna Siddhi Sthan; a large fair is also held there. Near Gola Road in Samastipur stands Khatushyam Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna. Major Hindu festivals are celebrated there with large gatherings, where thousands of worshippers come to seek blessings and take part in religious activities.

The stories behind these places also differ. Khudneshwar Asthan is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. Its name comes from Khudni, a Muslim woman who is said to have found the lingam at this site and become a devotee of Shiva. In Rosera, Baba’s Mazar includes the mausoleum of a Muslim fakir from the 13th or 14th century, beside the grave of his Hindu disciple. People of both religions gather there in large numbers to pray. In the village of Shiura, Baba Amar Singh Asthan is considered a national pilgrimage centre for the Nishad community; according to tradition, its significance dates back to the 16th century.

Historical Traces and Special Places

Vidyapati Dham is home to Baleshwar Mahadev Temple, described as the nirvana site of the poet Mahakavi Vidyapati. Rosera has another cultural landmark in Kabir Math Rosera: two of India’s 15 Kabir monasteries are located there.

The ancient ruins of Udyanacharya Dih are in the village of Karian, in Shivajinagar. Pandavgarh is a legendary and historical archaeological site on the Samastipur–Barauni railway line. A Mahishasur Mardini statue from Simaria-Bhindi, dating from the Pala period, is housed in the Bhagwati Temple. Chandrabhawan in Patori is considered a historic site of the Indian independence movement and is associated with Bhagat Singh and Chandrasekhar Azad. Pusa adds its own historical note: IARI is described as the birthplace of agricultural research and education in India.

Nature and Getting There

The RPCAU Biodiversity Park offers a different focus. More than 90 cactus species are collected and cultivated there for recreational purposes. Four ponds are managed separately for tilapia, integrated duck farming, aquatic plants, fish farming, recreation and boating. To the north, the Bagmati River separates Samastipur district from Darbhanga district.

Samastipur is well connected by rail and road. Samastipur Junction is about one kilometre from the district headquarters. When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider your preferred way of travelling alongside the religious or historical focus of your trip; the places mentioned offer specific themes to explore further as you plan.
