Tacheng brings together distinctive cultural sites, riverside scenery and public spaces. In the northwest of the city, the Red Building tells the story of the region’s architectural history; along the Ulasitai River, landscaped gardens and seasonal views of nature shape the cityscape. Parks and sports venues round out the experience. As you plan, you can consider whether to focus your trip on culture, time outdoors or a mix of interests.

Architectural History and Collections

The Red Building was constructed in 1914 in the northwest of the urban area, on Culture Street. The Russian-style building covers 885 square metres and has two floors and 16 rooms. These dimensions give a concrete sense of its layout. On 25 May 2006, it was designated as a major cultural heritage site under state protection, the sixth such designation. Today, it serves as the Tacheng Prefecture Museum and presents the region’s history and folk culture.

The Tacheng Accordion Museum offers a different perspective on cultural history and is considered the only accordion museum in China. More than 1,000 accordions from over ten countries are displayed across 500 square metres. The instruments include a handmade example that is more than 100 years old. A live performance can sometimes be heard at the museum, although it is not part of a reliably available programme. Visitors interested in music will find a contrast here with the Red Building’s architectural history: one centres on a single historic building, while the other houses an extensive collection of instruments.

Towers, Parks and Sports

Shuangta Park is named after its two old minarets. The towers are no more than 30 metres apart and are designated as a major cultural heritage site under state protection. The park thus combines a named place within the urban area with a distinctive architectural landmark.

In southern Tacheng, Qianquanhu Square is a versatile park with lake scenery, sports facilities, activities for children and places to relax. Its described winter recreation options also include skiing. Check whether this activity is available during your visit before making plans. Another place for exercise and events is the Central Stadium, also known locally as the racecourse. It hosts horse races, major sporting events and other sports activities.

River and City Squares

The section of the Ulasitai River that flows through Tacheng is more than five kilometres long. At Culture Square, the river runs through landscaped gardens with trees, lawns and flower beds. The square itself is open and multifunctional, serving as a place for relaxation, leisure, socialising and play. Here, the river and the square form a shared cityscape, distinct from the historic buildings and collections.

The season can also change how the city looks. In late autumn, mallards forage along the Ulasitai River. By contrast, skiing at Qianquanhu Square is part of the described winter recreation; check in advance whether it is offered during your visit. These two details relate to different places and seasonal interests: wildlife watching by the river and a possible winter activity in the park.

Choosing the Right Base

When looking for a holiday rental in Tacheng, you can first consider which of these themes matter most for your trip: historic architecture, music, time in parks, sports or riverside scenery. The Red Building is in the northwest, while Qianquanhu Square is in the south of the city. These locations offer a starting point for choosing accommodation near the sights you plan to visit. If your trip combines different interests, you can organise your options around the city areas and experiences that matter most to your plans.
