Shenyang
Accommodation in Shenyang
Shenyang brings together impressive history, museums, parks, and natural attractions. A striking starting point for exploring the city is the Qing Imperial Palace: its architecture tells the story of the Qing dynasty’s beginnings and brings together influences from different cultures. Other places to visit include Qing Zhaoling and the Qipanshan Scenic Area. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on historic architecture and exhibitions, or on landscapes and wildlife.
The Imperial Palace and its architecture
The Qing Imperial Palace in Shenyang was built between 1625 and 1637 by Nurgaci for the ancestors of the Qing dynasty from the Nuzhen, or Manchu, groups. Until 1911, the Shenyang Imperial Palace served as a secondary capital and a temporary residence for the royal family. A visit therefore takes you in your imagination from the dynasty’s early history to the period when the palace fulfilled this special role.
The complex combines architectural elements from Han, Manchu, and Mongolian cultures. Its buildings are arranged according to the Eight Banners system, a distinctive organizational structure of Manchu society. This layout is considered unique among palace complexes. During the reigns of Kangxi and Qianlong, the complex was remodeled and expanded: it includes more than 100 buildings and over 500 rooms across an area of about 60,000 square meters. The Shenyang Imperial Palace Museum, a Class 4A tourist attraction, is located at 171 Shenyang Road in Shenhe District.
Museums and historic sites
A range of museums and memorial sites offer further insights into history. The Zhang Xueliang Former Residence Exhibition Hall is a Class 4A tourist attraction at 46 Shaoshuai Mansion Lane, also in Shenhe District. The Shenyang September 18 History Museum is at 46 Wanghua South Street in Dadong District and is also classified as a Class 4A tourist attraction.
The China Industrial Museum, a national Class 4A tourist attraction, displays the first metal national emblem of the People’s Republic of China. If you are interested in industrial history, you can make this special exhibit a focus alongside the history of the palace. The museums give you several historical perspectives to choose from when planning your trip, without requiring you to settle on a single theme.
Qing Zhaoling and Beiling Park
Qing Zhaoling is the tomb of the first founder of the Qing dynasty, Emperor Hong Taiji, and his empress, Xiaoduanwen. The complex is considered an outstanding example of the combination of Manchu and Han Chinese architecture. Qing Zhaoling is located in Beiling Park. The site was originally an imperial burial ground and was converted into a park in 1927. Both the history of the tomb and the site’s former use can help you get your bearings as you explore this part of Shenyang.
Qipanshan and wildlife
Northeast of Shenyang lies the Qipanshan Scenic Area, which is part of a southern spur of the Hada mountain range in the Changbai Mountains. The area is a Class 4A tourist attraction and offers sightseeing, recreation, and cultural entertainment. Local attractions include Shitaizi Mountain City, Xiangyang Temple, and Dianjiangtai. This makes Qipanshan a destination in its own right for travelers who want to include mountains and cultural attractions alongside the city’s cultural sites.
The state-run Shenyang Forest Zoo is also located in the Qipanshan Scenic Area. It is home to more than 100 animal species and over 1,000 animals, including giant pandas, Amur tigers, Asian elephants, giraffes, leopards, kangaroos, meerkats, sea lions, seals, and capybaras. The zoo combines wildlife conservation with science education, research, and visitor recreation. For families, its different attractions can help you decide whether cultural discoveries, wildlife, or both should shape your trip.
Another named destination is the Shenyang Botanical Garden, also known as the Shenyang Expo Garden. This Class 5A tourist attraction is located at 301 Shuangyuan Road in Hunnan District. Metro Line 2 serves Beiling Park, the Liaoning Provincial Museum, the Liaoning Science and Technology Museum, and the Shenyang Museum, making it convenient to visit these educational and sightseeing attractions.
