Hanzhong combines traces of Han history with a riverside landscape in the heart of the city. The East Pagoda, historic sites associated with Han Xin and the collections at Hanzhong City Museum appeal to those interested in culture; Tianhan Wetland Park offers a different focus, with paths along the Han River and a diverse range of plant and animal life. When planning your trip, you can decide whether historical themes, outdoor activities in the park or both will shape your stay.

Han History and Historic Buildings

The East Pagoda in Hanzhong, also known as Jingmingsi Pagoda, is one of the city's oldest surviving ancient buildings. In 2013, it was included in the seventh group of China's nationally important cultural relics. Another historic feature is the pagoda's reflection in Yinma Pond: it was one of Hanzhong's eight most beautiful views. Those interested in architecture and the city's traditional history will find a different perspective here than in the museum collections.

Guhan Tai was once Liu Bang's palace in Hanzhong and is now part of Hanzhong City Museum. The museum area is open year-round free of charge, except Mondays for maintenance; an online reservation is required for visits. The museum is a National First-Class Museum and also a national AAA-rated tourist attraction. Its exhibitions include the “Thirteen Inscriptions of Shimen” from the Han and Wei periods.

Baijiangtan also links a specific site to the history of Han Xin: it is home to the historic altar where Liu Bang appointed Han Xin as a general. The museum area at Baijiangtan features exhibitions on Hanzhong's historical relics and Han Xin's life. The sites therefore have distinct themes: Guhan Tai is associated with Liu Bang's history, while Baijiangtan focuses on Han Xin's appointment and exhibitions about him.

Experience the Museum and Han Culture

Hanzhong City Museum combines its collections with educational and outreach programs. It has developed two animated teaching materials based on the plank road and the “Thirteen Inscriptions of Shimen,” as well as six digital teaching programs. These are complemented by an immersive AR classroom and a virtual tour using digital 3D glasses. Alongside the historic inscriptions on display, these different formats give the museum's work its own distinct focus.

Xinghan Shengjing, with five themed settlement areas, offers another way to experience Han culture. Performances at Hanjing Square include Sichuan opera face-changing, fire-breathing, Han opera and Hanfu dance. If these performances interest you, you can include this cultural focus in your trip plans alongside museum visits.

Paths and Nature Along the Han River

Tianhan Wetland Park is located along the urban stretch of the Han River in Hanzhong. It is home to 314 plant species, more than 30 fish species and more than 90 bird species.

Connected corridors, a riverside boardwalk and a levee road provide routes for walks and bike rides. The park has 16 kilometers of leisure trails and 6.2 kilometers of scenic boardwalks; a beach corridor, riverside boardwalk and levee-top road also connect the park areas. Local residents use the sports facilities for recreation and exercise. If you'd rather spend your time outdoors, these routes and spaces offer a clear contrast to the cultural attractions.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

Food and city life offer another distinct focus: Yinma Pond has a night market known for its snack street. The city's attractions therefore range from historic buildings and Han culture to exhibitions, riverside paths and a market visit. When looking for a holiday apartment in Hanzhong, you can start by considering which aspects of the city matter most to your trip. An interest in history will lead to different ideas for places to visit than a preference for walks, bike rides or an evening at the night market.
