Discover Yancheng: Salt History, Museums and River Culture
Accommodation in Yancheng
Yancheng is known for its museums, the history of sea-salt production and experiences along the Chuanchang River. It also offers Huai Opera on a theatre boat and the 486-hectare Yandu Park. When planning your stay, you can choose among exhibitions, salt traditions, evening culture and a park in the city centre to suit your interests.
Museums on Yancheng’s History
The New Fourth Army Memorial Museum is located downtown and is one of the city’s key sites for red tourism. As a national first-class museum, it is devoted to the history of the New Fourth Army. Seven exhibition halls are complemented by a hall for generals and commanders, a calligraphy and painting gallery, and an audio-visual hall.
On display are nearly 1,000 historical photographs and more than 800 artefacts, including weapons and equipment. The combination of images, objects and different exhibition areas gives visitors several ways to engage with the museum’s subject matter. If military history is of particular interest to you, you can make it a focus when planning your visit; the calligraphy and painting gallery offers a distinct perspective as well.
Sea Salt and the History of the Chuanchang River
The China Sea Salt Museum is located downtown between the old salt-transport canal, the Chuanchang River, and the historic Fangong Dyke. It provides a systematic account of the development of Chinese sea-salt production and the history of salt transport. It is the only sea-salt museum in China approved by the State Council to present the history of sea-salt culture.
Wax figures, sculptures and dioramas illustrate traditional salt-making methods and the lives of salt workers. Alongside the development of production, the exhibits also focus on working methods and living conditions. This makes a visit particularly interesting if you would like to learn more not only about the history of salt, but also how it was made and the people behind its production.
Opera, Local Specialities and Boat Rides
At Salt Town Water Street, you can enjoy Huai Opera aboard a theatre boat. Performances regularly start at 7:30 p.m. You can also sample local specialities in the riverside shops. Opera and regional dishes offer different ways to engage with local culture.
The Sea Salt Historic and Cultural Zone offers another way to experience the river, with night-time boat rides on the Chuanchang River. During the ride, visitors learn about the history of a salt-transport river that is more than 2,100 years old. The trip combines time on the water with an insight into the river’s importance to salt transport. The Euro-style Flower Street showcases another side of the city: this European-inspired district was developed as a destination for urban micro-tourism.
Yandu Park and Choosing a Focus for Your Stay
Yandu Park is in the centre of Yancheng, is connected to the old course of the Chuanchang River and covers 486 hectares. It offers a different focus from the museums and experiences related to salt history. If you want to prioritise exhibitions and culture when planning your trip, the two museums are useful points of reference. If you would like the park to play an important role in your stay, you can make Yandu Park a focus in its own right.
When looking for a holiday rental in Yancheng, it helps to first choose the experiences you want to shape your stay: museum visits, salt history, Huai Opera, night-time boat rides or Yandu Park. The city offers several distinct cultural and urban themes, so you do not have to limit your stay to just one side of Yancheng.
