Three You Cave: Rocky Landscape and Poets’ History

Three You Cave lies on a steep cliff on the north bank of the Yangtze River, at the entrance to Xiling Gorge and in the wider Yichang area. The cliff face, riverbank and gorge entrance provide the site with a distinct landscape setting. Inside the cave, the temperature remains between 14 and 19 °C year-round. This consistent range is a striking feature of the cave and complements the picture of the natural limestone formation.

The story behind the name also reaches beyond the natural setting: visits by the Tang poets Bai Juyi, Bai Xingjian and Yuan Zhen, as well as the Song poets Su Xun, Su Shi and Su Zhe, gave the cave its name. Recreated Old Town at the Yichang Museum

These include city gates and archways, temples and educational buildings, ancestral halls and homes. Furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties, together with objects from traditional crafts, adds to the city scenes.

The exhibition therefore focuses not only on individual buildings, but also on living spaces, furniture and crafts. This sets it apart from Three You Cave: there, the landscape is shaped by rock, river and the cave’s history linked to poets; at the museum, recreated cityscapes and objects from everyday life in the old city take centre stage. Hydropower and Environmental History

The Three Gorges Dam Research Base in the wider region offers further insights. Its indoor venues include the Three Gorges Project Exhibition Hall and the Three Gorges Project Museum, as well as the Yangtze Rare Fish Conservation Center and the Yangtze Rare Plant Research Institute. The names of these institutions reflect a range of topics: the Three Gorges Project, as well as rare fish and plants. The base also developed the “National Pillar—Century Project” course series for primary, middle and high school students.

The Three Gorges Project Museum is dedicated to patriotic education and making knowledge about hydropower accessible to the general public. Its exhibitions cover changes to the natural and human-influenced environment in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, the project’s history and achievements, and the history and development of hydropower in China.
