Temples with a rich history, long trails passing through several places, and access to the Ngong Ping Cable Car give Tung Chung a variety of facets. You can focus your stay on culture, hiking or a cable car excursion. For families planning together, the different themes offer specific starting points: first decide which experiences you want to focus on, then choose your holiday apartment in Tung Chung.

Temples and historical traces

The Hau Wong Temple in Sha Tsui Tau, Tung Chung, is dedicated to Yeung Hau Wong (King Yeung Hau). A bronze bell in the temple bears the date 1765, suggesting that it may have been built that year.

The Tin Hau Temple in Wong Lung Hang, Tung Chung, also has a unique history. It is the only temple still standing in Hong Kong that was built from granite slabs. It was relocated in 1991. The granite slabs were dismantled one by one so that the temple could later be rebuilt in its original condition in Wong Lung Hang. Visitors interested in temple architecture and the preservation of historic buildings will find a tangible cultural point of interest here.

Tung Chung Fort and Tung Chung Battery are also part of the area's history: the fort was declared a monument in 1979 and the battery in 1983. Fu Tei Wan Lime Kiln is located near the battery. It was built during the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD) and moved to the area around the battery to preserve it for public display. The two temples, the fort, the battery and the lime kiln thus offer different ways to explore Tung Chung's cultural heritage.

Hiking trails with different routes

For longer hikes, the Tung O Ancient Trail runs for more than 10 kilometres from Tung Chung and ends in Tai O. Along the way, it passes through San Tau, Sha Lo Wan, San Shek Wan and Sham Wat, among other places. These places give the route a clear sequence; it offers a way to explore other places on foot from Tung Chung.

Another option is the Mui Wo section of the Islands Nature Heritage Trail: it runs for 7 kilometres from Pak Mong in Tung Chung to Mui Wo and takes about 3 hours to complete. If you prefer to plan your days using an approximate time estimate, this section provides a useful guide. Wong Lung Hang Picnic Site is next to Wong Lung Stream and is connected to Yi Tung Shan by the Wong Lung Hang Country Trail. So, in addition to the longer route to Tai O, there are other hiking options to choose from in Tung Chung.

Cable car and traditional festival

To access the Ngong Ping Cable Car, walk from Exit B of Tung Chung MTR Station to the Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal. From there, the cable car goes to Ngong Ping. This straightforward route is a useful guide if a cable car ride is part of your travel plans. It differs from the hikes: first, you make your way to the terminal, then continue by cable car.

Another cultural event is the annual Hau Wong Festival in Tung Chung. Cantonese opera is performed there on the day of worship. If you are interested in local traditions and performing arts, the festival offers another facet of the area. These interests can help you decide what to focus on during your trip to Tung Chung.
