Kaifeng: Song Dynasty Culture and Historic Pagodas
Accommodation in Kaifeng
Kaifeng’s history can be explored through a variety of landmarks: at the Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden, where a famous painting is recreated on a grand scale; at pagodas and temple buildings; and through the history of the Northern Song Dynasty. When planning a holiday apartment stay, it is therefore helpful to start by considering which of these cultural aspects you would like to shape your visit.
A Painting as the Blueprint for the Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden
The Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is a large cultural theme park reconstructed at a 1:1 scale based on Zhang Zeduan’s famous painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival.” The site currently covers more than 600 mu. Its focus on performances and experiences of intangible cultural heritage is also part of its character: numerous displays of national intangible cultural heritage are incorporated into the Garden.
Visitors can stroll between pavilions and halls wearing Hanfu and watch folk performances. The Garden also includes the Dongjing Food Workshop snack street and a Food City with numerous regional snacks. A visit therefore offers insight into performances and regional food culture, rather than focusing solely on the painting’s reconstruction.
Nighttime experiences are also part of the park’s development. In its third phase, the immersive live-action horseback battle show “Yue Fei·Yancheng Victory” was introduced. In recent years, the “Night Tour Qing Garden” project has also been added as a nighttime experience of Song Dynasty culture. If these offerings interest you, you can include them as separate aspects of the Garden in your travel plans.
Pagoda, Park, and Spring Blossoms
The Kaifeng Iron Pagoda was built in 1049. The glazed pagoda is octagonal, has thirteen stories, and stands 55.08 meters above ground. It survived repeated wars, floods, and earthquakes. In 1961, the State Council designated it one of China’s first nationally important protected cultural relics.
The pagoda is located in Iron Pagoda Park, in the northeastern part of Kaifeng’s urban area, and classified as a national 4A tourist attraction. In spring, numerous cherry trees blossom there, drawing visitors who come to take photographs. This adds a distinct seasonal highlight to your choice of travel dates: the cherry blossoms complement the view of the historic pagoda with a springtime setting. If you plan to focus your stay on the park, you can use its northeastern location as a reference when looking for a suitable area to stay.
Temple Architecture and the History of the Northern Song Dynasty
Since its reconstruction during the Qing Dynasty, Daxiangguo Temple has largely retained a layout along a south-to-north axis. Following the gate or Beilou Tower are the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the Glazed Hall of the Eight Treasures, and the Sutra Repository. This sequence gives the temple a distinctive architectural focus among Kaifeng’s cultural attractions.
Among the temple’s notable objects is its bell: about 4 meters high, weighing more than 10,000 jin, and cast in 1768. Famous as the “Xiangguo Frost Bell,” it is counted among Kaifeng’s Eight Scenic Spots. The temple also houses an approximately 7-meter-tall, fully gilded, four-faced thousand-armed and thousand-eyed statue of Guanyin. Artisans during the Qianlong period carved it from a large ginkgo tree.
Kaifengfu offers another historical perspective. This important institution of the Northern Song Dynasty was responsible for administering the capital and its metropolitan hinterland. Those interested in the capital’s historical organization as well as its buildings will find another way to explore Kaifeng’s history here.
