Zhangye offers two distinct focal points for your trip: the historic Zhangye Dafo Temple complex and the wetland landscape of Zhangye National Wetland Park. The temple is known for its significant buildings and preserved cultural relics, while the park features marsh, river and lake wetlands as well as a range of leisure activities. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are especially interested in cultural history, nature or both.

Zhangye Dafo Temple and Its Buildings

The Zhangye Dafo Temple complex preserves the Dafo Hall, the largest Buddhist building from the Western Xia in China. It is also home to Asia’s largest indoor reclining Buddha made of wood and clay. These distinctive features give the temple complex a clear cultural identity, with both Buddhist architecture and an extraordinary work of art at its heart.

Alongside the Dafo Temple, built during the Western Xia, attractions in the Dafo Temple Scenic Area include the Ming-era Mituo Thousand-Buddha Pagoda, the Bell and Drum Tower, and the Qing-era Shanxi Guild Hall. These buildings offer a glimpse into different historical periods. Visitors interested in architecture and history can focus on these connections between eras as they explore the scenic area.

The Zhangye Dafo Temple covers more than 30,000 square metres and preserves more than 10,000 valuable cultural relics. It is also home to the most complete known copy in China of the first woodblock-printed edition of the Daming Sanzang Shengjiao Beicang. The Zhangye Dafo Temple is also a nationally protected major cultural heritage site in China and a national 4A-rated tourist attraction.

Wetlands and Leisure at the Wetland Park

Marsh, river and lake wetlands come together across an area of 15,000 mu at Zhangye National Wetland Park. The park was rated a 4A tourist attraction in December 2011. Its landscape contrasts distinctly with the temple complex’s historical focus and appeals to travellers who want to include nature and wetlands among their interests.

The park features wooden boardwalks, viewing terraces and birdwatching pavilions. Leisure cycling, sightseeing trips in tour vehicles, boat trips and fishing are also available. The park’s activities therefore offer a range of options: birdwatching and scenic views are complemented by exercise and activities on the water. Which ones you prioritise depends on what you want to focus on during your stay.

Choosing the Right Focus for Your Stay

The Wetland Park is closely connected to Zhangye’s urban area. If proximity to the city is important to you when choosing a holiday rental, this connection is a practical consideration. The temple complex offers a different focus, centred on architectural history, Buddhist art and cultural relics. When looking for a holiday rental in Zhangye, you can first decide which of these themes you would like to shape your trip most.
