Jiayuguan brings together the history of the Ming-era Great Wall of China, city museums, a large landscaped lake and leisure activities. This raises a practical question for planning your trip: would you most like to focus on the Wall and its history, museums, or landscape and leisure experiences? You can also use these priorities to guide your search for a holiday apartment.

The Ming Great Wall and its historic sites

The Jiayu Pass is part of the Jiayuguan municipality. It marks the starting point of the western section of the Ming-era Great Wall of China. Near Jiayuguan is the Overhanging Great Wall, on the eastern slope of Heishan, north of Shiguan Gorge. It was an important passage on the ancient Silk Road and a military fortress in the western defence system of the Ming Great Wall. Also nearby is the First Beacon Tower, the westernmost beacon tower on this section of the Wall.

These sites offer different historical perspectives: the Jiayu Pass represents the starting point of the western section of the Wall, the Overhanging Great Wall links the Silk Road with the history of defence, and the First Beacon Tower marks the westernmost position among the Ming beacon towers. If the Wall is to be the focus of your trip, these distinctions can help you decide what to prioritise.

Museums and traces of the past

The Jiayuguan Great Wall Museum is China’s first specialist museum dedicated to the history and culture of the Great Wall of China. The Jiayuguan City Museum has a different emphasis: its “Great Wall · Steel City” urban culture exhibition explores Jiayuguan’s cultural identities as a city of both the Great Wall and the steel industry. Another exhibition, described in 2024 as “Gobi Pearl – Jiayuguan City’s Development Achievements”, focuses on the city’s more recent development and its achievements. Check the City Museum’s current exhibition details before travelling.

Nearby, in Xincheng, brick-painting tombs from the Wei and Jin dynasties form part of the Guoyuan–Xincheng tomb group. It lies about 18 kilometres east of the urban area. More than 1,000 tombs from this period are found in the wider area, which is known as an “underground gallery”. This archaeological site complements the visible architecture of the Wall with a view of the region’s past.

Lake, landscaped scenery and leisure

The East Lake Ecotourism Area features an artificial lake covering 560,000 square metres, as well as landscaped promenades, viewing pavilions, bridges and a pier. This gives it a distinct focus from the Wall and museums: here, the landscaped waterside setting takes centre stage. East Lake was also designated a training base and a dedicated triathlon venue in 2006. It has hosted international triathlon points races and Asian Triathlon Championships.

The Tola River Eco-Cultural Area is a national 3A-rated tourist attraction. Its facilities include a night-lit tower built in the Ming and Qing style, a large musical fountain and a water-screen film. Some performances may vary; if this experience affects your plans, check the dates in advance.

Wine-making and a theme park

At the Zixuan Winery, visitors can observe the wine-making process, from harvesting and destemming through pressing, fermentation and sulphur treatment to blending, bottling and corking, and can take part in a wine tasting. This offers a practical look at the individual production steps, not just the finished product. Check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.

Jiayuguan Fantawild Silk Road Divine Painting theme park covers around 1,000 mu and features 45 major indoor and outdoor themed attractions, along with more than 200 leisure and landscape projects. It is suited to families with children and young people looking for adventure. If the park is part of your plans, check current operating details before your visit.

Getting there and choosing a base

Getting there may also be a factor in planning your accommodation. The G30 expressway and G312 national highway run through the Jiayuguan area. Jiayuguan South Railway Station is an important transport hub on the Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed railway; Jiayuguan Airport is a Class 4E international alternate airport on a Eurasian air route. Routes and flight schedules can change, so check the current timetables that apply to your trip.

Whether the deciding factor is the history of the Wall and the city, the waterside scenery, wine-making or the theme park, first decide which experiences you want and take them into account when choosing where to stay. This way, your search for a holiday apartment can focus on the Jiayuguan you actually want to discover.
