Manama: Theater, Postal History and Souqs
Accommodation in Manama
Manama combines striking theater architecture with insights into Bahrain’s postal history and the lively range of goods on offer in its souqs. Visitors planning a trip can bring together different cultural themes, from grand theaters to stamps, historic postal equipment and traditional markets. Deciding which of these experiences to focus on can also help you choose a suitable holiday apartment as a base for your stay.
Theater architecture and grand performances
The Bahrain National Theatre has an auditorium with 1,001 seats and wood-paneled interior walls. Its architectural design is inspired by the tales of One Thousand and One Nights. The theater covers around 12,000 square meters and is one of the largest theaters in the Arab world, as well as its third-largest opera house—after the Cairo Opera House in Egypt and the Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman. It opened in November 2012 in the wider travel destination of Muhafazat Al-Asimah, and the theater also offers a view of the sea.
International performances hosted by the Bahrain National Theatre have included appearances by the Orchestra of the 21st Century of Russia, Yanni and Placido Domingo, the Bolshoi and Mariinsky ballets, and Il Divo. These are part of the venue’s history; they do not describe its current program. For travelers interested in music, opera and dance, the theater offers a distinctive cultural highlight alongside the city’s historic sites.
Postal history in two exhibitions
Just behind Bab Al Bahrain is Manama’s original post office, which now houses a renovated museum on the history of postal services in Bahrain. Its collection ranges from a photographic archive documenting postal services from their beginnings and a complete catalogue of Bahraini stamps to stamps from around the world. It also includes historic cancellation marks, scales and franking machines. The exhibits give postal history a tangible dimension: alongside the stamps themselves, the equipment shows how mail was handled and franked.
Distinct from the museum is a permanent exhibition established by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities in 2015 in the old government building in Bab Al Bahrain. Ammar Basheir designed the exhibition on the history of postal services in Bahrain; it features stamps, memorabilia and historic photographs. Together, the museum and exhibition offer different ways to explore the same subject, but they are not one and the same exhibition venue.
More experiences in the wider travel destination
The wider travel destination of Muhafazat Al-Asimah also offers cultural and historical points of interest. The Bahrain National Museum is located in Manama on an artificial peninsula overlooking Muharraq and opened in 1988. Its six main halls cover burial mounds, Dilmun, Tylos and Islam, customs and traditions, traditional crafts, and documents and manuscripts. Khalaf House illustrates Manama’s historic links to the pearl economy and trade—a different perspective on history from the postal exhibitions.
The wider destination also includes Block 338, a pedestrian district in the heart of Adliya. There, restaurants serve festive meals, traditional Bahraini dishes and drinks. Bab Al Bahrain houses a tourism office and a permanent visitor gallery. These places complement the museum and theater perspective with insights into food, trade and visitor services.
Souqs and culinary highlights
Manama Souq is near Bab Al Bahrain in central Manama. Its offerings include shops selling souvenirs, gold, spices and textiles, as well as traditional cafés; the selection may change. Bab Al Bahrain Souq has more than 30 shops and cafés offering a wide range of food and drinks. This commercial offering may also change over time. The two markets provide different specific options for anyone wishing to include souq visits or culinary experiences in their trip.
When choosing your holiday apartment in Manama, first consider which of these themes matter most for your trip: theater and performances, postal and museum history, or markets and food. This lets you tailor your search to your interests without confusing the different places and what they offer.
