Culture

Azatamut has 22 apartment buildings and a cultural palace. A cultural centre is one of the local public institutions. The town is also associated with the coexistence of cultures of different origins. Its football teams are part of its distinctive community character.

Makaravank is a monastery complex in Tavush Province, on the forested highland slopes of the Bazum mountain range. The buildings are made of dark pink andesite and red tuff. Richly carved geometric and decorative motifs depict flowers, fish, birds, sphinxes and sirens.

History

Azatamut was founded in 1970 as a workers’ settlement around the bentonite clay factory. The settlement initially bore a name referring to the bentonite clay factory. In 1978, it was renamed Azatamut. The name Azatamut recalls the entry of the 11th Red Army from Azerbaijan through this area into Armenia in November 1920.

Azatamut is described as a problematic post-industrial area.

Geographical Location

Azatamut lies on the right bank of the Aghstev. The Ijevan–Berd highway passes through the town, which is located 11 kilometres northeast of Ijevan. Azatamut is situated at approximately 580 metres above sea level.

Barxudarlı and Sofulu, villages in Azerbaijan’s Qazakh District, directly border Azatamut.
