Haghpat: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Haghpat Monastery is one of two components of the serial UNESCO World Heritage Site of Haghpat and Sanahin in Armenia’s Lori Region. The complex dates from the 10th to the 13th century and blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Haghpat can then continue searching for accommodation.
Culture
In the Middle Ages, Haghpat was a cultural and intellectual center. A book depository preserved manuscripts there. Haghpat’s architecture represents a combination of Byzantine ecclesiastical traditions and Caucasian vernacular building traditions.
The monastery complex includes a narthex, a refectory, a scriptorium, the Chapel of Hamazasp, a bell tower, chapel tombs, khachkars, and a fortified defensive wall. Its oldest monument, the St Nshan Church, was built between 976 and 991 AD.
On a hill between Haghpat and Sanahin stand the ruins of Kayan Fortress, also known as Aknaberd. The fortress was built in 1233 by a bishop of Haghpat Monastery.
