In the Overberg, remarkable nature experiences meet coastal history and museum visits. Multi-day hikes, a mountain bike route in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve and the opportunity to observe African penguins offer different perspectives on the region. When choosing your holiday accommodation, it is also worth first considering which of these experiences you want to shape your stay.

Hiking trails and active days

The Whale Trail is a multi-day hiking route through the De Hoop Nature Reserve. Along the coast, there is an opportunity to observe southern right whales. If you want to make a longer hike the focus of your stay, you can distinguish this experience from shorter route options: In the wider area of the Overberg District Municipality, the De Mond Nature Reserve offers two hiking trails lasting approximately two and four hours respectively. These times are approximate and provide a guide for planning your day.

The Kogelberg Nature Reserve offers a different kind of active outing: a moderately challenging, 22-kilometre mountain bike route runs through the Kogelberg Valley, starting at the reserve’s administration office. White-water kayaking on the Palmiet River is also permitted in the same reserve each year. Cycling and kayaking are therefore different ways to enjoy the natural surroundings of the reserve.

The Damara Trail is another longer hiking option in the wider area of the Overberg District Municipality. The trail is 16.5 kilometres long and is designed as a two-day hike with an overnight stay. It runs from De Mond to Waenhuiskrans, also known as Arniston. If you are planning a hiking holiday, these multi-day trails are quite different from the two shorter routes in the De Mond Nature Reserve.

Fynbos, coast and wildlife watching

The Kogelberg Nature Reserve is known for the exceptional diversity and quality of its fynbos and is regarded as the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, recognised and registered by UNESCO, is also located in the wider area of the Overberg District Municipality. More than 80 percent of this biosphere reserve consists of mountainous landscape. These natural areas give a stay a different focus from museums and places with maritime history.

In the wider region, the Agulhas National Park encompasses the southern tip of Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. Another nature outing takes you to the Stony Point Nature Reserve, home to a unique colony of African penguins. A boardwalk allows the public to observe the animals up close in their natural habitat. Remains of the infrastructure of the former Waaygat Whaling Station are still preserved at the site. A community restaurant next to Stony Point sells refreshments and food during the day. Access is via Porter Road in Betty’s Bay, off the R44 (Clarence Drive).

Maritime history and museums

The Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum focuses on maritime topics and shipwrecks along the dangerous coast of the southern Cape. It also shows their influence on the development of the Overberg District Municipality. At the Caledon Museum, you can encounter artefacts and displays from Caledon’s past. The museum is housed in a Victorian home and features historical exhibitions from 1840 to 1900.

Elim also brings together local history and heritage: the restored Elim Heritage Centre provides information about the history of the town; the village of Elim has been declared a National Heritage Site. The Harold Porter Botanical Gardens are also among the tourist attractions in the wider area.

When choosing holiday accommodation, you can weigh these different priorities against each other: should your stay focus mainly on hiking trails and nature, or would you also like to include maritime history and museums? The mix of active days, wildlife watching and culture you are looking for can help you choose the right locations for your trip.
