Nature's Valley
Accommodation in Nature's Valley
Discover Nature’s Valley through a range of natural experiences: from the white sandy beach, look out towards the Tsitsikamma Mountains; along the Groot River, a short circular trail leads through indigenous forest. There is also a lagoon and climbs for hikers and experienced cyclists. When planning, you can weigh up whether the beach, forest or outdoor activity should be the focus of your stay.
Along the Groot River and on the hiking trails
The short circular trail along the Groot River is a walkway made of recycled Polywood. It has a toe board on one side and a railing on the other. It leads through indigenous forest, where forest birds and mammals can be observed. Those interested in forest nature will find a different perspective here than at the open beach.
The Point Trail starts at the eastern end of the beach and passes a secluded gorge. The trail then climbs at a moderate gradient to a viewpoint overlooking the valley. Access via the estuary mouth depends on whether it is open. On the other side of the mouth is the Pig’s Head Climb, reached by a short, steep ascent. The walkway at the Groot River is recommended as the starting point for this hike.
The two hikes differ in their described routes: the Point Trail leads to a viewpoint above the valley, while the Pig’s Head Climb is defined by a short, steep ascent. For planning your day, the riverside circular trail offers another option: it is short and leads through the forest rather than climbing to a viewpoint.
Beach and lagoon
The beach at Nature’s Valley combines white sand with views of the Tsitsikamma Mountains. In October 2023, Bitou Municipality reported that the beach had retained its Blue Flag status. This statement reflects the report at that time.
The lagoon is another possible nature experience. A 2020 post by the Nature’s Valley Trust describes canoes and kayaks available for hire at De Vasselot Campsite for paddling on the lagoon. Check before your trip whether this hire service is currently available. This way, you can include the lagoon in your plans without assuming that rentals are guaranteed.
Climbs and getting around the village
Experienced cyclists can tackle challenging climbs on both sides of the valley, with views of large Yellowwood trees. This is a different focus from the short riverside trails or the moderately ascending Point Trail: the cycling routes are expressly intended for experienced cyclists. The village also has a network of narrow paved roads.
If you are planning for a range of interests, this contrast can help you choose the focus of your holiday: the beach and lagoon, forest watching, hiking trails or challenging climbs each offer a different reason to spend time outdoors. When looking for a holiday apartment in Nature’s Valley, you can first consider which of these experiences matter most for your trip. This aligns your choice of destination with the activities you have planned, rather than with a general idea of what a stay should look like.
