Mossel Bay combines nature experiences with a diverse museum history and distinctive tasting experiences. You can discover Fynbos and forest vegetation at the Indigenous Field Garden, explore maritime history or plan a hike along the cliffs. Which of these aspects interests you most can also shape your choice of holiday apartment.

Museum History and Discoveries

The Mossel Bay Museum was founded on 23 August 1960 and opened to the public in 1963. At the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex, the Maritime Museum explores Portuguese maritime history from 1488 onwards and its connections with English and Dutch explorers. Since 2002, the upper floor of the Maritime Museum has also housed exhibitions on the history of Mossel Bay.

Within the museum complex, the Granary serves as a reception and information area; its exhibitions cover the surrounding areas. It was built in 1788 by the Dutch East India Company following a record wheat harvest. The present-day building is a replica on the original foundations. A museum visit therefore brings together historical subjects and exhibitions about the surrounding areas.

The Shell Museum and Aquarium focuses on sea and land snails, shells, their ecology and their use by people. The aquarium includes a touch pool where visitors and school groups can discover marine animals from along the South African coast. A reconstructed freshwater spring is also among the features described on the grounds of the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex.

Vegetation and Outdoor Experiences

The Indigenous Field Garden at the Ethno-Botanical Garden offers an immersive look at Mossel Bay’s Fynbos, thicket and Milkwood forest vegetation. The garden provides a different focus from the museum exhibitions: here, vegetation takes centre stage instead of maritime and local history. If you are planning your trip together, you can weigh up whether a garden experience or a programme with more of a cultural-history focus better suits your interests.

For an active outing, the 13.5-kilometre St. Blaize Trail runs westward along the cliffs from Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse to Dana Bay. The route is estimated to take six hours. The distance and time estimate help with planning the day; on their own, they do not indicate the individual level of difficulty.

The Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex is near a beach from which whales can be watched between June and November. This seasonal window offers a different nature experience from the trail or garden. If whale watching is important to your travel plans, take this period into account.

Tastings and Holiday Interests

Cape Saint Blaize Distillery in Mossel Bay offers gin tastings, a factory tour and a gin masterclass. There are also gin-and-food pairings, which can be combined with a meal at Café Gannet. This adds a tasting experience to the choice of museums and nature. As practical details of the offering may change, check them before planning your trip.

When looking for a holiday apartment, a simple question can help: would you rather plan your stay around museum themes, the garden experience, a cliff hike or a tasting? Mossel Bay offers specific options for each of these interests. Decide which experiences matter to you, and use that priority to guide your choice of accommodation.
