In Dr Kenneth Kaunda, fascinating cultural sites meet distinctive landscapes: the Vredefort Dome is one of the world’s most remarkable geological structures, while museums in Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom showcase different chapters of regional history. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether nature experiences, exhibitions or both should take centre stage—and which places will influence your choice of holiday accommodation.

Discover landscapes and natural attractions

The Vredefort Dome is the world’s oldest, largest and most deeply eroded complex meteorite impact structure. Various geological features that reveal this complex impact structure can be seen at accessible geological outcrops. The N12 Treasure Route passes through Potchefstroom and runs near the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site. If you are interested in how the landscape was formed and what it is made of, you can make this special place a focus of your trip.

A different landscape defines the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve just outside Klerksdorp. The 1,200-hectare area features low koppies, scattered acacia trees, extensive grassland and three seasonal dams. The reserve also has a large picnic area, three chalets and a caravan park. You can explore the nature reserve through its open grassland and seasonal water bodies; its location makes Klerksdorp a clear point of reference when choosing where to stay.

The NWU Botanical Garden on the Potchefstroom campus also offers its own nature-focused experience. It borders the North-West University campus, covers almost 3 hectares and consists mainly of indigenous plants. A few exotic plants are of botanical, medicinal or educational importance. The garden is open to the public. On the approximately 1-kilometre-long Tree Route, visitors can discover more than 100 trees in the garden. Boskop Dam Nature Reserve and the Vaal River, both tourist attractions, are also in the JB Marks Local Municipality. The Orkney Likkewaan Hiking Trails are among the district’s natural heritage resources.

Museums and exhibitions in Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp

The Klerksdorp Museum is housed in the Old Klerksdorp Prison, a late Victorian sandstone building dating from 1891 in the City of Matlosana. Its extensive permanent exhibition includes Khoisan rock art originally from an initiation site for young girls. The House Museum offers another perspective, with five rooms representing different historical periods. Authentic furniture and household items from each period give the rooms their distinctive character.

In Potchefstroom, the NWU Gallery offers a different focus. It has two gallery rooms and a large exhibition space for temporary exhibitions. Since opening, the gallery has hosted more than 100 exhibitions featuring local and international artists. It also houses artworks from the NWU Art Collection that are not currently on loan. If you are interested in university history and the region’s cultural heritage, you can also visit the North-West University Museum on the Potchefstroom campus: it preserves and presents artefacts relating to the university’s history and the region’s cultural and historical heritage.

The Matlosana Cultural Festival is part of the City of Matlosana’s annual events calendar. Together with the varied museum offerings, it provides another way to experience the region’s culture.

Choose your travel area and a suitable base

The N12 Treasure Route passes through Potchefstroom and the City of Matlosana, connecting Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein and Hartbeesfontein. An important railway line from Gauteng to the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces also runs through Potchefstroom. Rietspruit Dam Resort is considered an established tourist attraction in the Ventersdorp area, which is now part of the JB Marks Local Municipality.

If museums and the botanical garden are on your wish list, Potchefstroom may be a good starting point when looking for holiday accommodation. Klerksdorp is a useful point of reference when choosing an area for the Klerksdorp Museum and Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve. If you would like to combine nature attractions with the district’s various towns, first decide which stops you prefer, then choose a suitable base.

The towns of Potchefstroom, Stilfontein, Klerksdorp, Wolmaransstad and Orkney also help you find your way around the region.
