Pointe D'esny
Accommodation in Pointe D'esny
The lagoon of Pointe d’Esny is one of the largest lagoons in Mauritius. It is protected by a coral reef far offshore and forms a large natural basin with calm, shallow water. The water temperature is pleasant all year round. The lagoon is used for kitesurfing, wingfoiling and windsurfing. This brings a distinctive landscape and several water sports together in one place.
Water sports and beach access
Several kitesurfing and wingfoiling schools, as well as water sports clubs in Pointe d’Esny, offer lessons, equipment rental and coaching. If you are planning a lesson or rental, check availability in advance; offers and conditions may vary. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether the lagoon scenery or one of these water sports will play a bigger role in your stay.
Access to Pointe d’Esny beach is via public footpaths between the camps. If beach access is important to your holiday plans, take these paths into account and check current conditions on site. This lets you consider the beach as a separate point of reference alongside the lagoon and the sports on offer.
History in the wider destination of Grand Port
In the wider destination of Grand Port, museums and historic sites offer a different focus from Pointe d’Esny’s lagoon and water sports. The National History Museum is located in Mahébourg, in a park of about 12 acres on the banks of the River La Chaux. The museum displays numerous objects relating to corsairs and the naval Battle of Grand Port. Most of the exhibits come from the wrecks of La Magicienne and HMS Sirius, two British frigates that sank in Mahébourg Bay in 1810. Their origin in the wrecks gives the objects on display a specific connection to the two ships; the naval battle is another maritime focus of the collection.
The historic site of Vieux Grand Port includes the ruins of the first Catholic church, built by Mahé de Labourdonnais in 1737, as well as a powder house dating from the French period of 1722 to 1810. The Frederik Hendrik Museum serves as an interpretation centre for the site. The two dates serve different purposes: 1737 is the year the church was built; 1722 to 1810 is the French period to which the powder house is attributed. The District Council of Grand Port lists the Frederik Hendrik Museum in Old Grand Port among the district’s attractions.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh these highlights against each other: Pointe d’Esny combines lagoon scenery, beach access and water sports; the wider destination of Grand Port adds museums and historic sites.
