Heritage in Flacq

The National Heritage Fund’s heritage list for Flacq contains nine entries: Arul Migou Dhandayouthabani Swami Kovil, Limekilns (Poste de Flacq), Old Cemetery (Poste de Flacq), Old Sugar Mill Chimney (Petite Retraite), Pont D 'Epinay (Bramsthan), Ruins of Quatre Cocos Factory, Sugar Factory (Belle Mare), Tomb of Le Comte Gaud Louis Ravanel (St. Julien Cemetery), and Verandah of Manager's Residence (Constance).

The names highlight different themes. Limekilns, Old Sugar Mill Chimney, Ruins of Quatre Cocos Factory, and Sugar Factory show the thematic range of the entries. Old Cemetery and Tomb of Le Comte Gaud Louis Ravanel, Pont D 'Epinay, and Verandah of Manager's Residence also contribute to this variety of entry names. Arul Migou Dhandayouthabani Swami Kovil is part of it too. The list thus reveals its diversity through its varied entry names. It can be read through these themes, rather than reducing Flacq’s heritage to a single type.

Mauritius in a broader context

Beyond Flacq, Mauritius offers other historical themes. The Le Morne Cultural Landscape lies at the southwestern tip of Mauritius and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on 10 July 2008. It illustrates the history of slavery in Mauritius and the pursuit of freedom in the 17th and 18th centuries. It also bears witness to maroon resistance to slavery: the mountain served as a stronghold and refuge for escaped enslaved people; physical and oral evidence documents this use.

Vieux Grand Port is considered the site of the first human settlement in Mauritius. The Frederik Hendrik Museum opened on 27 May 1999.

Nature-related themes are also diverse. Bras d’Eau National Park covers 497.2 hectares and is predominantly planted with mahogany, araucarias, tecoma, and eucalyptus. Mare Sarcelle is part of Bras d’Eau National Park and is home to mangroves, native plant species, and several migratory bird species. The Coq des Bois Trail leads through the forest and ends at Mares Chevrettes. Blue Bay Marine Park is home to a species-rich marine ecosystem with diverse marine fauna and flora, including a varied coral community.

Forests, mangroves, and migratory birds in the Bras d’Eau setting thus contrast with other nature themes, such as the coral community in Blue Bay Marine Park. Both examples give an impression of the different landscapes and nature-related themes found in Mauritius.

Cuisine and transport are also part of the wider national picture: dhollpuri and roti are among Mauritians’ favourite dishes. Bus services operate in different regions of Mauritius and provide travel to almost every place on the island. Check current routes and timetables for specific journeys.
