Discover Shakshouk: Lakeshore, Nature and History
Accommodation in Shakshouk
Shakshouk is best understood through Lake Qarun and the landscapes around it: a section of the lakeside promenade has been developed in the area, while birdlife and archaeological sites are among the nearby points of interest. Here, a specific place by the lake meets a region with a long natural and cultural history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can choose your focus based on whether the lakeshore, wildlife watching or history will shape your trip.
Lake Qarun: Birds and Geological History
Lake Qarun is one of the oldest natural lakes in the world and is the remaining part of the ancient Lake Moeris. In the area around Shakshouk, it is also an important place for nature watching, where flamingos and white pelicans can be observed. The lake is home to nearly half of Egypt’s several hundred bird species; which species you can see may vary by season. So if birdwatching is important to you, take the time of year into account when planning your trip.
The Baraka Qarun Nature Reserve in Al-Fayyum Governorate was designated in 1989. It covers 1,298.3 square kilometres and serves the sustainable use of natural resources. This protected landscape adds a broader perspective on nature and resource conservation in the surrounding area to the view of the lake.
Archaeological Traces Around the Lake
Important archaeological remains from Roman and Pharaonic times lie north of Lake Qarun and are used for tourism. Sites around the lake include the Old Kingdom quarry, the Temple of Qasr al Sagha, the archaeological city of Dimeh and the Abu Leif Monastery. The range extends from an early quarry to urban and monastic sites. If you plan to visit a particular site, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
The Lakeside Promenade and Environmental Education in Shakshouk
In July 2025, a 350-metre section of the lakeside promenade on Lake Qarun in the Shakshouk area was opened and beautified. The work included building nine iron pergolas, improving the lighting, laying a printed concrete surface and renewing the enclosure. The specific length and construction details give this section of the lakeshore its own character. If you plan to stop there, check its current condition and visiting arrangements in advance.
A community environmental centre opened in the nearby Qarun Nature Reserve on 22 December 2025. If you would like to include the centre in your plans, check in advance whether visits are possible.
Fish Trade and Regional Cuisine
A historical insight into the fish trade comes from a 2016 field study, which describes fish sales at markets in Shakshouk, including sales by auction. At the time, two of the twelve fish marketing sites on Lake Qarun were in Shakshouk; they operated daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. A specific restaurant option is Marassi Al Buhira, a fish restaurant in ‘Izbat Shakshūk, in Ibshaway District, Al-Fayyum Governorate. As restaurant status and opening hours can change, check whether it is currently open before visiting.
More Things to Explore in Al-Fayyum
The wider destination of Al-Fayyum offers additional nature and culture experiences in their own right. Wadi El-Rayan Protected Area is a large natural landscape of desert, lakes and oasis, and attracts visitors with Egypt’s only waterfalls. The Magic Lake lies within the protected area, and the surrounding sand dunes are suitable for sandboarding. For a different perspective, the two-storey Kom Aushim Museum houses collections spanning the Predynastic period through the Coptic and Islamic eras, and offers insights into the daily lives of Al-Fayyum’s inhabitants at the time.
When choosing where to stay, it helps to keep these priorities separate. If the waterfalls or sandboarding in Wadi El-Rayan are your main focus, compare accommodation options suited to this regional itinerary separately. That way, you can choose based on the experiences that matter to your trip, rather than treating all the sights as a single destination itinerary.
