Hajj is the major Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca and takes place during a fixed period in the Islamic calendar. Mecca, Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah are connected with the rites, while Medina is often visited before or after Mecca. A successful plan must combine religious preparation with the current official entry, permit, health, accommodation and transfer requirements.

Distinguish Hajj, Umrah and Medina

Hajj includes rites at specific locations around Mecca during the Hajj season. Umrah can generally be performed outside that season and follows its own arrangements. Medina is commonly included in a wider pilgrimage journey, but a stay there should be planned separately from the obligatory Hajj rites.

Permits, visas and official bookings

Use the current official Saudi information and the authorised booking route for the relevant pilgrimage season. A tourist visa does not replace the Hajj permit or the current pilgrimage process. Do not rely on an old package description when checking eligibility, accommodation, transport or access.

Health requirements, vaccinations, insurance, heat precautions and mobility support should be checked with the relevant authorities and qualified medical professionals. Requirements and application windows may change before departure.

Accommodation and transfers

For Mecca, compare the accommodation location with the planned transfer arrangements and the practical walking or shuttle route. During Hajj, crowds, heat and restricted movement can make a short map distance much longer in practice. In Medina, check the route to the Prophet’s Mosque and the transfer between cities.
