Choose a Madeira base
Funchal offers the widest choice of restaurants, services and organised excursions. The south coast is generally convenient for warm-weather stays, while the north and west provide rugged scenery, quieter villages and different weather. Inland locations suit walkers who value early access to mountain routes.
Plan roads and excursions
A hire car is useful for viewpoints, villages and trailheads, but steep roads and tunnels can make journeys slower than expected. Check parking, access roads and the distance to the airport. For levada walks, confirm transport to the start and the return route.
Match the home to the climate
Ask about heating for higher or northern locations and ventilation for warmer periods. Outdoor space, drying facilities and proximity to a shop can make a difference. If you plan to walk, choose a base with practical storage for boots and equipment.
