Rolling hills and grazing land give Elaine its rural character. At the same time, traces of railway and Gold Rush history meet a range of recreational activities at the Elaine Recreation Reserve. If you are considering holiday accommodation in Elaine, you can weigh up whether the landscape, local history and activities are your main focus, or whether Elaine would be an interesting stop on a longer drive.

Landscape and Traces of Local History

Elaine was originally established as a stopping place on the passenger railway line built in 1862. A visible remnant of this history lies west of the Midland Highway: the railway track can still be seen behind a row of trees. Another historical trace leads to the Stony Rises Diggings, later known as the Elaine Diggings. They opened in 1862 during a small gold rush. Significant historic architecture also characterises the town.

The St Sava Monastery–Elaine may also be of cultural and spiritual interest. It is located at the Ven. Alypius the Stylite Memorial Church, 414 Mt Mercer Rd, Elaine VIC 3334. If you would like to include this place in your trip, you can consider it another sightseeing highlight alongside the traces of local history.

Sport and Play at the Elaine Recreation Reserve

The Elaine Recreation Reserve offers opportunities for a range of activities. The full-sized sports oval is designated for cricket and Australian Rules football. Dedicated nets are available for cricket practice, and the tennis courts cater to both competitive and casual players. When planning your day, you can choose between a team sports field, a practice facility or tennis.

The reserve also has a shaded playground with swings, climbing frames, slides and a playhouse, as well as several picnic tables. A barbecue pavilion provides seating; a drinking fountain and public toilets are also available. If children enjoy climbing and playing, the playground offers specific attractions, while other visitors can opt for the sports facilities or a break at a picnic table. The sports oval, tennis courts and cricket practice nets can be hired through an online booking system or by contacting the reserve directly.

Local Produce and Seasonal Sunflowers

Just outside Elaine, The Farmgate is a shop selling fresh produce direct from the farm. It is known for its range of potatoes and also offers fresh vegetables, eggs and meat. Shopping for local produce adds a different focus to sporting and historical interests. During the flowering season, visitors can pick their own sunflowers in a 21-acre field at The Farmgate Shop.

Elaine as a Stopover or Destination

The Midland Highway runs through Elaine and is an important tourist route to the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast. This makes Elaine an option to include as a stopover. When choosing your holiday accommodation, the first consideration is therefore the town’s role in your trip: do you want Elaine itself, with its landscape, history and recreational activities, to be part of your itinerary, or would you like to stop here while travelling along the tourist route?

Elaine Cemetery is another place to visit: its grounds are open to visitors year-round. Elaine Public Cemetery has picnic tables near the lake. Together with the picnic facilities at the Recreation Reserve, these give you two different places to take a break outdoors. You can discover Elaine through the aspects that matter most to your trip, from historic traces and sport to play and local produce.
