Holiday apartment in Rečica ob Savinji: Culture, Nature and the Savinja

Rečica ob Savinji combines evidence of the past with natural sites, traditional events and activities on the Savinja. In the middle of the market square stands the pillory of Rečica ob Savinji, one of twelve surviving pillories in the Slovenian region. The approximately two-metre-high stone pillar has a characteristic cap and an iron ring. Church and architectural history, a gorge, a cave and regional specialities reveal further facets of the town.

Culture

Another testimony to the town’s history is Tavčarjev dvor. The single-storey stone building was constructed in the Renaissance style in the 16th century; in German documents it is referred to as Tautscher Hof. The Church of Saint Kancijan is also closely connected with the history of Rečica ob Savinji. In 1173, the Patriarch of Aquileia, Udarlik, met there with numerous dignitaries. The present church was almost completely rebuilt after the fire of 1799. The parish of Rečica ob Savinji is dedicated to Saint Kancijan, a martyr.

The traditional tourist event “Od lipe do prangerja” is one of the oldest events of its kind in the Upper Savinja Valley. The Lenartov sejem, in turn, revives the memory of the former market atmosphere in the Upper Savinja Valley.

Nature

The Bohačeva linden is listed under the name Turnškova lipa in the register of natural assets of local importance. The event “Večer pod trško lipo” takes place beneath its crown.

Župnekovo žrelo is a cave that acts as an intermittent spring, or a spring shaft that emerges only at times. The site is easily accessible and admission is free. The Tesna Gorge is also located near Dol–Suha. It is approximately 50 metres long, more than 10 metres deep and around 2 metres wide. The approximate dimensions convey the particular narrowness of this gorge without defining its measurements more precisely than the description allows.

Culinary Specialities and Events

ŠtrukljiFest takes place every year on the last Sunday in August at the fire station grounds in Šentjanž/Grušovlje in Rečica ob Savinji. Various types of štruklji are sampled at the festival, which also features a rich cultural programme.

Another regional speciality is zgornjesavinjski želodec. Visitors can try it at the “Ocenjevanje želodcev” event or on a farm. The culinary offerings therefore include both an explicitly named event and the opportunity to discover the speciality on a farm.

Activities

The Slovenia Green Wellness Route passes through the Ljubno/Rečica section on the Ljubljana–Kamnik–Ljubno/Rečica–Velenje route. On average, the route involves around 40 kilometres of moderate cycling per day on mixed surfaces; more than two-thirds of the route is paved. It can also be explored in shorter sections, for example at weekends, with the help of rail connections. The route, daily distance, surface and rail connections describe different possible ways of experiencing this route.

Experiences in Rečica ob Savinji include water sports, kayaking and rafting on the Savinja. The Airurban flight school operates at the launch site and offers panoramic flights and tandem jumps. The paintball park at Borsečnik Farm is located at an altitude of 900 metres on the municipality’s highest-altitude farm. It covers 10,000 square metres.
