Holiday apartment in Jamník – church, history and festivals

Jamník is located in the southern part of the Hornád Basin in the valley of the Jamníček stream.

History

The most important monument in Jamník is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. It is first mentioned in a historical document from 1305. Jamník itself is first mentioned in medieval documents in 1277.

The church was originally a Gothic building from the beginning of the 14th century and belongs to the Odorín parish. Its square-plan tower was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 17th century and completed with a gable attic. After the vault collapsed in 1940, the damaged building was replaced by a modern new structure; its reconstruction was completed in 1951.

A prehistoric settlement already existed north of the church in the 3rd millennium BC, during the Late Stone Age, or Neolithic. It was followed by further settlements from the Late Bronze Age and the Late Roman period. Ceramic finds from the period of the Great Moravian Empire in the localities Pod dubom, na Nivkách, Pri starej jamníckej ceste and Pri krížiku, as well as remains of kilns at the Panský dvor site, attest to an early medieval settlement in Jamník.

Community life

The recurring annual calendar of the municipality includes Jánske ohne, which is associated with a folk celebration, as well as Stavanie mája during the Pentecost holiday. Amateur theatre also has its own tradition in Jamník: new theatre performances were presented at Christmas, on New Year's Day, during Carnival and at Easter. Amateur theatre performances from Jamník were also presented in surrounding municipalities and at district amateur theatre competitions.

Events and sports

The seventh edition of Jamnícke leto was announced for 30 July 2022 in the OTJ grounds. At the 2026 edition on 20 June 2026, children were to have access to a bouncy castle, horse riding, face painting and various entertainment activities. A tasting of various kettle-cooked specialties was also planned.

The multi-purpose sports ground in Jamník has an artificial surface and can be used for tennis, ball games and ice hockey in winter. The football section of OTJ Jamník currently comprises five age categories. The men's team of OTJ Jamník currently plays in the 6th league.

Transport and routes

The Class II state road II/536 forms the transport axis through Jamník and connects Spišská Nová Ves with Spišské Vlachy. A network of bus routes provides local suburban connections as well as long-distance connections to cities in Slovakia via Spišská Nová Ves or Levoča.

The road next to the church path in Jamník was widened to improve traffic safety. A footpath to the church was also built in Jamník.
