Lipie: Discover the castle, church and nature

Lipie offers several very different discoveries: the barely discernible remains of a bishop’s castle, a Gothic parish church and opportunities for environmental education. Castle ruins and village history

The barely discernible ruins of the bishop’s castle stand in the northwestern part of the village. They are situated on a promontory about 25 m high above the Mogilnica River. The castle was shaped like a residential tower built of fieldstone and brick. Its rectangular ground plan measured 9.8 m by 18.2 m. It was probably built in the first half of the 14th century.

Today, the ruins are barely discernible, so the surviving remains should not be mistaken for a fully recognizable residential tower. For visitors interested in medieval architectural history, Lipie offers an alternative to an intact castle complex: the focus is on the surviving features and the ruins’ position above the river.

Gothic church with a distinctive tower

Another historic building is the listed parish church of Matki Bożej Częstochowskiej. The Gothic church dates from the 15th century; its tower was built in 1586 and is crowned by a circular coat of arms. The church thus combines its general classification as Gothic architecture with a precisely dated feature of the tower. Forest and environmental education

The nature trail “Las wokół nas” offers a different perspective on the village. It runs through a wooded area adjoining the Environmental Education Centre in Lipie.
