Polana combines a rich local history with several named routes for hikes and walks. Its local history includes a local heritage collection in the village community centre, former church sites, chapels, and a memorial cross. The cultural and natural heritage trail “Jaskinia w Rosolinie” runs from Polana to Czarna Dolna. It is 9.3 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. Check trail conditions before setting out. Four unmarked walking routes start in central Polana. Route No. 1, “Przez Łazy i Rosoliniec,” is about 7 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Route No. 4, “Potokiem Kosów,” covers about 5.5 kilometres and takes around 3 hours. The two estimated times therefore differ by half an hour.

Routes No. 5, “Na Otryt przez Wańka Dział,” and No. 6, “Do dawnej kopalni ropy naftowej,” can also be compared by their lengths and walking times. Route No. 5 is about 14.5 kilometres and takes 4 hours and 30 minutes; Route No. 6 is about 12 kilometres and takes 4 hours. Route No. 5 is therefore the longer of the two and also has the longer stated walking time. Of these four walking routes, No. 4 has the shortest stated time, at about 3 hours, while No. 5 has the longest, at 4 hours and 30 minutes.

The blue PTTK hiking trail and the Szlak Papieski both lead from Polana towards the same destination, Przełęcz pod Hulskiem. The stated walking time from Polana to the pass is 2 hours for each route. Alongside the unmarked walking routes, you can therefore choose two named hiking trails with a different, but also clearly defined, time commitment.

Local history in a collection, churches, and memorial sites

The Polańskie Zbiory Historyczne is a local heritage collection housed in Polana’s village community centre. It is curated by Maria Faran, a local resident. The former Greek Catholic Church of St Nicholas served as a Roman Catholic church from 1969 to 2013. Today, it is a chapel in the Parish of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Polana. The Kościelisko in Polana is another distinct historic site: it consists of the foundation remains of the former Roman Catholic Church under the patronage of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the churchyard, and a bell tower. The two sites tell local history through different architectural forms—a chapel and an ensemble of foundations, churchyard, and tower.

A more recent memorial is the Krzyż Pamięci. Residents of Polana erected the cross in 2018 to mark the centenary of the restoration of Polish independence. It commemorates those who died fighting for their homeland’s freedom. The Kapliczka Poznarowa has its own family history: the Tomasz Poznars family had it built in 1929 to give thanks for Tomasz Poznars’s safe return from Ukrainian captivity in 1919.

Polana Ostre: former oil mines and a horse-riding trail

Polana Ostre is home to former oil mines. A marked walking route leads to two shafts. The hamlet is also a destination on a section of the Lipie–Polana–Serednie Małe horse-riding trail: Section IV leads to Polana Ostre and takes about six hours on horseback. This gives visitors two different ways to explore the site: a walk to the mining remains and a longer route on horseback.
