Ośno Lubuskie offers two distinct sides to a stay: an almost completely preserved ring of medieval defensive walls and Lake Reczynek, the town’s bathing area. There are also marked hiking and cycling trails, as well as historic buildings in the old town. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether the town’s history and architecture or time by the water should play a bigger part in your travel plans.

The Medieval City Walls

The ring of granite and brick walls is the main part of Ośno Lubuskie’s medieval fortifications. It is almost completely preserved and up to 6 metres high. The complex consists of various structures: the surviving walls contain two round towers, three full-height rectangular half-towers with their roofs, and seven rectangular half-towers without roofs. There are also seven gates.

The design of the fortifications is also noteworthy. Brick battlements topped the walls. They could be reached from the defensive walkways on the inner side, and loopholes were set at the same level. Those interested in medieval town planning will find more than a continuous line of walls here: towers, half-towers, gates and defensive walkways all contribute to the character of the complex.

Around the turn of the 20th century, promenades were laid out around the walls. They were paved and planted with two rows of lime trees. The design of the surrounding area is therefore also part of the fortifications’ history: the promenades were created as walking paths, while the walls themselves form the medieval core of the system.

Church, Town Hall and Chapel

St. James’s Church stands on a small rise in the centre of the old town’s street plan, with the town hall adjoining it to the east. The church is considered a particularly valuable and imposing example of Gothic architecture and has retained its appearance well. Among its most valuable furnishings are a Mannerist high altar, a pulpit and a baptismal font. Its architecture and furnishings offer different points of interest for visitors with an interest in cultural history.

The restored town hall is one of the town’s most valuable historic monuments and an important part of its local cultural heritage. The Muzeum Ziemi Torzymskiej is housed in the historic town hall. In the old town, the town hall and church stand directly next to each other; the museum adds another cultural focus to a visit.

The Gertrude Chapel stands on a rise northwest of the old town. It was built around the middle of the 15th century on the site of an older half-timbered building. The small brick building has a single nave and consists of a single-room hall with a three-sided eastern end. Its modest, clearly defined design contrasts with the imposing Gothic St. James’s Church.

Lake Reczynek and Trails in the Natural Surroundings

Lake Reczynek lies within the town limits to the north and serves as a municipal bathing area. Nearby are a recreation centre with watersports equipment rental, a campsite, a small sports field and a playground. Kayaks and pedal boats are available to rent at the bathing area. Those who want to focus their stay on activities by the water will find a different emphasis here than among the historic buildings.

Marked hiking and cycling trails pass through Ośno Lubuskie. Both offer a chance to relax and explore the natural surroundings. They can therefore also shape your travel plans if you would rather spend time outdoors than visit individual buildings. For families with different interests, it may be helpful to consider in advance whether the shared stay should focus on local history, trails in nature or time at Lake Reczynek.
