City history around the market square
The market square is at the heart of the medieval street plan, which has been preserved to this day. Since 2015, it has been home to a sculpture depicting Antoine Cierplikowski in a barber’s chair—an unusual feature in this historic urban setting. The Dominican monastery is among Sieradz’s oldest historic buildings. Its origins date back to the first half of the 13th century; the present building includes elements of an earlier Gothic structure, including cloisters.
The churches also point to different aspects of the city’s history. The church dedicated to Saint Stanislaus was built around the middle of the 13th century and has one of the few early Gothic portals in Poland. The Gothic All Saints’ Church has held the status of a minor basilica since 19 March 2018. Together with the medieval market square, these buildings give Sieradz’s historic district several architectural points of interest.
Museums: Everyday Life, Architecture and Crafts
The District Museum in Sieradz has permanent exhibitions entitled “Życie ludzi w pradziejach”, “Sieradz w średniowieczu”, “Portret szlachecki i rzemiosło artystyczne”, “Apteka staromiejska w Sieradzu”, “Regionaliści sieradzcy XIX–XX w.” and “Kultura wsi sieradzkiej z początku XX wieku”. Their subjects range from prehistory and the city’s medieval history to crafts, regional culture and everyday life in Sieradz and the surrounding area.
The Sieradz Ethnographic Park offers a different perspective. It is home to the Dom Tkacza, an example of rural architecture from the early 19th century that was relocated here from Zgierz. Inside, visitors can see historic weaving equipment and the furnishings of a residential house. The homestead of folk sculptor Szczepan Mucha, from the village of Szałe, dates from the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. The house, workshop and garden contain a collection of his sculptures, created between 1972 and 1983.
The park’s exhibition pavilion displays historic agricultural tools and machinery, including ploughs, harrows, threshing machines, winnowing machines and sieves. The museum also holds craft workshops, museum classes and demonstrations of traditional techniques. Blind and visually impaired visitors can join a free guided tour of the exhibitions at the District Museum by arranging it in advance by telephone. Wheelchair users can visit the grounds and exhibition pavilion at the Sieradz Ethnographic Park; grass areas and wooden interiors present some limitations.
Park paths and a cycling route
Wzgórze Zamkowe in Sieradz has park paths, pedestrian and cycling bridges, and uncovered bunkers dating from the German occupation. Here, landscaped routes meet the built remains of a different historical era. The “Sieradzka Eska” offers a different focus: the yellow-marked route is 109 kilometres long and passes through Sieradz. Its length makes it an option for anyone looking to include a longer cycling route in their travel plans.
