A valley between the Wierchomlanka and the Poprad

Wierchomla Wielka combines a striking valley location with a long history. Together with Wierchomla Mała, the village lies in the valley of the Wierchomlanka stream, surrounded by forested mountains. The stream later flows into the Poprad. Wierchomla Wielka is also located in the Poprad Landscape Park—a clear geographical reference for anyone wishing to understand the village in the context of its wooded surroundings.

The settlement begins at the entrance to the stream valley and extends for about six kilometres along the road and the Wierchomlanka. This elongated layout is useful when planning your stay: when choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which part of the village best suits your plans. This makes the valley location a practical part of choosing where to stay, rather than just a name on your list of destinations.

The Lemko church and the history of the village

In the centre of Wierchomla Wielka stands the historic Lemko Church of St Michael the Archangel, dating from 1821; a cemetery adjoins it. A few old Lemko buildings have been preserved nearby. The church, cemetery and remaining buildings give the village a visible cultural focal point. If you are interested in Lemko history, this is where a specific historic building connects with the character of the village.

The early settlement can also be traced through specific historical details: Wierchomla Wielka was founded in 1595 by Cardinal Jerzy Radziwiłł under Wallachian law. The settlers included Wallachian shepherds who had migrated there. The founding of the village and the origins of some of its settlers are both part of its history. They add insight into the settlement’s beginnings to the impression conveyed by the church and the few surviving Lemko buildings.

Special natural features

The church is also connected with a protected habitat: its attic provides a habitat for lesser horseshoe bats and bent-winged bats. Both are among Europe’s rarest bat species. Wierchomla Wielka thus brings together two distinct themes in one place—the historic Lemko heritage and the protection of rare animals. This is a remarkable aspect to discover, while the church’s significance remains more than just its history.

Several unused mineral-water springs containing iron and sulphur add another natural feature to the picture of the surrounding area. They contrast with the landscape shaped by the stream, valley and forested mountains. Together, these features give Wierchomla Wielka a varied character: you can get to know the village through its geographical setting, cultural traces and distinctive natural features.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Wierchomla Wielka, you can choose a location that suits your interests.
