Środa Wielkopolska: Brick Gothic, Market Square and Water

Churches and Historic Urban Structure

The Collegiate Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a late Gothic brick church. It was built between 1423 and 1428. It also played a role as a meeting place: during the First Polish Republic, the regional assemblies of the Poznań and Kalisz voivodeships were held here. Architecture and history therefore come together directly in this building—from its bricks and construction period to the church’s political significance in that era.

The city’s history extends beyond individual buildings. In the historic centre, the original street network has been preserved within the former city walls. Stary Rynek is the surviving market square of the medieval town. Together, these features draw attention both to the layout and to the town’s former centre. Another architectural stop is the former Evangelical, Neo-Romanesque church on Wiosny Ludów Street. It dates from 1881 to 1888. Reservoir, Cycling Route and Railway History

The artificial reservoir north of Środa Wielkopolska was created when the Moskawa was dammed between 1968 and 1971. Its geodetic area is 47.7 hectares. The body of water is used mainly as a recreation area for the city’s residents. There are beach volleyball courts on Plażowa Street: two are next to a tennis court, and two more are directly beside the beach at Lake Średzkie. The town’s themes also include physical activity and transport history. The Transwielkopolska Cycling Route passes through Środa Wielkopolska, offering a concrete point of interest for a trip that includes cycling. The historic Środa Wielkopolska–Zaniemyśl narrow-gauge railway connects the two towns. The Środa Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum is housed in the ŚRODA WIELKOPOLSKA MIASTO station building. The cycling route and railway line are therefore distinct travel-planning themes alongside the city’s history.

Nature in the Municipality and Choosing Accommodation

Beyond the city, the view extends southwest into the municipality to the Bagna Średzkie wetlands. There, the Struga Średzka forms extensive wetlands that are protected as a landscape area. Rare and protected bird species found there include, among others, herons, mute swans, grebes, black-headed gulls, lapwings and penduline tits. This natural area is part of the municipality; it adds a distinct perspective on the landscape and its birdlife to the city’s historical and water-related themes.
