Åsand lies at the northern end of the lake, where the Hurdalselva flows into it, about one kilometre south of Hurdal Torg on Fv 180. This flat recreation area offers a fine sandy beach, plenty of space and places to stop and rest. If you’re planning a day by the water, you’ll find a different setting here from the trails that start in the centre.
Hurdal Ski Centre is located just north of the centre. Its facilities include a children’s slope, a snowboard area and groomed cross-country ski trails. Operating hours and conditions are seasonal and may change; check them before planning a winter activity.
The Hurdal Museum Hulderhaugen is also near the centre, in Doktorboligen. As an exhibition venue, it invites visitors to explore Hurdal’s historical collections and exhibition. If you’d like to combine culture and activity, you can plan a museum visit alongside the nearby trails and viewpoints.
Trails from the centre and routes to choose from
Hiking trails and ski trails are easy to reach from the centre of Hurdal. Several hiking trails lead to Brustadkollen and Hanskollen, viewpoints near the centre. Check trail conditions and signs locally before setting out.
The “I skogene øst for Hurdalssjøen” route starts in the centre, leads to the southern municipal border with Eidsvoll, then heads north back to the starting point. It runs partly on public roads and partly on forest tracks. For a cycling tour through the central cultural landscape, there’s the easy Hurdal torg–Haugbrua route: between Hurdal torg and Strømmen skole, it follows a shared pedestrian and cycle path for 2.5 kilometres. The Hurdal torg–Hurdal kirke route has a cycle path along its entire length, with no steep climbs or descents. Check current trail conditions before cycling.
Across Hurdal municipality: water, heights and winter trails
Within the municipality, Hurdalssjøen offers swimming spots, hiking trails, opportunities for paddling and fishing spots. Totenåsen and Fjellsjøkampen offer further hiking opportunities: both areas have kilometres of marked trails and viewpoints. In winter, the municipality’s groomed ski trails and opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take centre stage.
The summit of Fjellsjøkampen is 812 metres above sea level, in the Fjellsjøkampen Nature Reserve, and can be reached via two marked routes. The shorter route is 2.3 kilometres long and steeper; the longer one is 5.7 kilometres and flatter. This difference can help with planning your hike, but the information given doesn’t allow you to estimate walking times.
Historic sites across the municipality
Rognlisaga stands on the foundations of one of the region’s first sawmills, built by Carsten Anker in 1795. The site is privately owned and used by the Hurdal Historical Society for visits and demonstrations. Check possible dates with the society in advance.
Another historic complex is Garsjøen Skysstasjon. The main building dates from the 18th century and houses most of the Hurdal Historical Society’s collections. The farmstead also includes an old Størhus with an external gallery and an old Bua; the old King’s Road runs between the buildings. Together, they form a farmstead complex unique in Norway. Vestlia adds to the area’s historic character: the Finnentorp between Rustad and Jeppedal dates from the mid-17th century.
