Geographical Setting

Monoszló lies six kilometres north of Lake Balaton, on the eastern edge of the Káli Basin and in the small Monoszlói Basin.

Discoveries

South of the settlement, Hegyestű comprises a geological educational site and a quarry museum; there, an almost 50-metre-high quarry wall exposes the interior of the basalt volcano. Hegyestű is therefore a specific destination for those interested in geology.

Monoszló’s Reformed church, formerly the Church of Saint Michael, was probably originally built in the Romanesque style in the 12th or 13th century and dedicated to Saint Michael in 1476.

Hegyestű is a presentation site of the Balaton Uplands National Park and part of Hungary’s first geopark. In clear weather, the viewpoint at the basalt organ offers a view of the buttes of the Balaton Uplands.

Landscape

The surrounding Monoszlói Basin is described as a secluded valley with wooded hills.
