Kerkáskápolna: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Kerkáskápolna lies in the widened valley of the Kerka stream; the terrain is mostly flat and rises gently towards the north. Kerkáskápolna is one of the settlements in the historic ethnographic region of Őrség.

History

During the existence of the Őrség organisational structure from the 11th to the 14th century, Kerkáskápolna was the village of the Kerka guards. In 1428, the settlement was first mentioned in documents as Alkarika or Kápolnásfalu.

The medieval church of Kerkáskápolna was destroyed around 1590 as a result of Turkish attacks. A simple wooden chapel was built in place of the medieval church; it too had disappeared by the middle of the 18th century. Between 1732 and 1735, almost half of the village's inhabitants fled to Somogy because of religious persecution and increasing burdens.

Culture

The European cultural route of Saint Martin (Via Sancti Martini) was established in 2005. Its Hungarian section passes through Kerkáskápolna and was recognised by the Council of Europe as an outstanding European cultural route. On the way to the Slovenian border, this section is marked with a yellow bar and is approximately 100 km long.

In Kerkáskápolna there is a small chapel-shaped funerary monument which, according to oral tradition, is associated with the farmer Avas Dániel. A comprehensive local-history collection belonging to the private collector Balek Tamás is housed in a house inherited and renovated by the church community.

Landscape

In 1818, meadows and hayfields shaped the landscape along the Kerka; to the north, dense forests and pine stands rose across the ascending terrain.

Activities

The Őrség-2 cycle route initially heads towards Kerkáskápolna along dirt tracks through forests; from Kerkáskápolna, it returns north to Őriszentpéter along a forest track. The Őrség-3 cycle route reaches Kerkáskápolna from Őriszentpéter in a southerly direction via dirt tracks and through forests, then continues to Ramocsa on asphalt.
