Culture
The exhibitions at the KomlóVerzum visitor centre and the museum collection are open to everyone during opening hours for an admission fee. The József Attila City Library and Museum Collection in Komló presents local history, natural science and temporary exhibitions. The collection also documents scientific research into the city and its surroundings through an archive, a rock collection, a palaeontological collection, a microlepidoptera collection, archaeological finds and a specialist library. The permanent exhibition “The Natural World of the Mecsek” presents the natural world of the Mecsek.
The Komló Theatre and Concert Hall opened on 5 November 1982 and serves as a venue for performances by amateur and professional theatres as well as artistic groups. Stage productions can be seen and heard well from every seat in the auditorium. The Díszítőművészeti Műhely was founded in 1978 and preserves local and county-renowned embroidery motifs by creating, teaching and maintaining them.
History
Jánosi Engel Adolf Castle is a late eclectic building erected in 1900. It has been under nationwide protection since September 2011 and has largely been preserved in its original form. Komló’s valuable heritage also includes patience bottles associated with the city’s mining past, made by Gábor Farkas.
One of Komló’s sights is Hasmányi Church, a Gothic church ruin dating from the 13th century. The memorials distributed throughout the city and the open-air exhibitions featuring machinery address various aspects of the history of mining.
Local Specialities
Komlói fánk is a characteristic local pastry. It was first made in Komló in the early 1980s and is available only in Komló, at Katica pastry shop.
Events and Recreation
Komló’s International Sausage-Stuffing Festival takes place every year at the beginning of February; the 15th edition was announced for 7 February 2026. Participating teams are given an active role in the proceedings rather than merely taking part passively.
The Komlói Bányásznapok is Komló’s largest cultural event dedicated to preserving traditions. It commemorates the city’s mining past with a multi-day festival featuring concerts, family programmes, exhibitions and community activities.
The spa at Hotel Ambient uses alkaline thermal spring water containing lithium. It has three indoor thermal pools and one outdoor thermal pool, as well as two children’s pools.
