Nature

Rabel is located in the Schlei Nature Park. The northern section of the Schlei, which includes Rabel, is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. In this northern Schlei area, there are designated paths for cyclists and walkers, some along the shore and some inland.

Rabelsund is a remarkable local point where the Schlei reaches a depth of 22 metres. Near Rabel, the shore of the Schlei forms a small cliff with views across the water.

History

Gut Buckhagen is designated as a sight in Rabel. Historic fish weirs associated with Gut Buckhagen were used for fishing at Rabelsund until 1905.

Routes and Activities

The “Along the Schlei Shore to Rabelsund” route is an easy, unpaved circular trail measuring 5.03 kilometres. It starts in Rabel and leads over field paths and lightly trafficked roads. The route crosses extensive rapeseed fields. Hikers and cyclists enjoy the expansive landscape directly along the Schlei.

Activities associated with visits to Rabel also include boat trips on the Schlei.
